Library, Sunday

Being himself this week meant Lee was a lot less rambunctious and a lot more calm during his library shift. He was still a little agitated for the fact that he'd lost something important but he wasn't taking that agitation out on the books or by running up and down the aisles.

No, later, he'd just punch a wall or something.

For now, he was paging through a catalog he'd requested on a whim, checking out a few different things and wondering if he could make it work. It was a complete whim and he still had no idea what he wanted to do after graduation but things were becoming a little clearer, at least.

And the catalog had pictures, if anything.

"Isn't it a little...cumbersome?"

He knew it had been when he was five and trying to run away with it, anyway.

"Not if you make the candy yourself," Cal pointed out because, hey, that was what he'd done.

There was a long, long pause.

"Dude; that's messed up."

But not as messed up as the fact that it sounded like Lee had a girlfriend that could probably best Claire at morbidity, and that was not fair.

"You honestly thought it could have been real?"

Weren't they the same thing?

Cal was just going to stare a moment longer, trying to form words. He shook his head as if to shake them out but all he said was, "What?"

Quickly followed by, "Wait, no. Nevermind. Don't need to know that."

There were a lot of words Cal could think of to describe it; affectionate wasn't one of them. He shook his head a little more before letting out a snort of a laugh.

"I'll have to take your word for it," he said. "Uh, enjoy having your jar back, I guess?"

Cal barely held back a comment about, hey, at least his girlfriend didn't want to cut him open (he assumed), and held up his hands. "I'm out of its influence now," he said. "All is well."

"A little kid's hands?" Cal asked, because of course he wouldn't know anything about that. "What, did it get lifted when everyone was all little and stuff?"

"...Bummer," said Cal, who was trying not to think about getting punched in the jaw by Lee, because ow. "Those blankets. They'll get you ever time."

It took a great, momentous feat not to mention that, well, yeah, that's what came with actually having legs longer than a toothpick and being tall along with it.

"Well, apparently she had butterfingers, too," he pointed out, "since she dropped it...wherever."

"That's a good point," Cal had to agree. "I mean, it's in a jar. You'd think a kid would think that meant it was particularly good candy, or something."

"Ugh," the twist of Cal's face agreed. "No kidding. For one, construction paper tastes cross anyway, and two, it'd have kid spit all over it. I'd bet she'd realize it was cardboard and just spit it back in the jar, so there's be a little chewed up glob of pulp inside it then, too."

And he would know better than anyone that that was exactly what that little girl would have done.
