Ethics [Tuesday, March 10, 2nd period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"People are always going to fall in love or think they're in love, whatever. You can't stop people from being morons," Chuck said with a slight frown. "It's been my experience that people that think they are in love tend make stupid decisions. And when the inevitable dumping or abandonment happens then they make even worse decisions or become emo and useless. That's probably what they were trying to prevent."

Chuck really, really felt strongly about the whole love thing being a complete waste of time and energy. He totally was not mentioning anger or hatred because he sooooo couldn't go into that without being a hypocrite.

"I don't think it's realistic," Tony said. "You can't turn off stuff like anger and love. You can redirect it or squish it down and ignore it or whatever, but it won't just go away."

"I just don't think it's possible to tell people what to feel," Dor replied. "It's probably not healthy either."

"I don't claim to understand anything about love," Helen said. "But from what I have seen, people don't seem able to stop themselves from it."

"It seems to show a remarkable lack of understanding about human nature," Wendy said after a while. "Oh, and Ben says 'hi'." Which he hadn't, but she wasn't going to let that get in the way of making a point.

"Dude, people feel things, that's what makes us people," Hurley said. "Without that, we'd be, like... robots or something."

"Love is a dangerous emotion," Temari said, looking away carefully. "It can be warped and twisted by others until you aren't able to recognize it anymore."

"I assume they are trying to prevent the Jedi being ruled by emotion," Leto replied. "But emotion is human, and the fate of humanity is ruled in part by the combined force of those strong feelings."

He remembered his grandmother's concern when she first saw the connection between his father and mother.

"Any strategy that fails to take this into account will be flawed. It will be the weak spot, where unpredictability enters. Humanity has evolved through sexual reproduction based on the seemingly chance attraction of individuals. This creates mistakes, yes, but also the new, unthought future."

He was the result of a long line of careful planning, achieving it's goal by the selfish choices of his grandparents and parents. That led him to a question he felt was important.

"How do you chose your mate? And if love develops within a marriage, how do you deal with it?" Of course, marrying for reasons other than love was something he saw nothing strange in, but even then people often grew close, eventually.

"In my time, there isn't a hard and fast rule against love. Even my Master is the son of two Jedi," Zayne said. "But there are some groups trying to get it put in with fear, anger, and other emotions that can influence your judgment like that."

Zayne found it interesting that those groups apparently won the argument.

Peter smirked and looked at Anakin with an expression that clearly asked if Anakin really wanted him to go on about this topic, given the last time they'd talked about it.

"Well, they couldn't stop you from falling in love, right?" Joan asked. "I mean, that interview I read in the paper said that you were married and having a baby."

It said a lot more than that and Joan's cheeks flushed red with embarrassment just thinking about it.

"All you need is love...." Marco sang, horribly off key.

"I don't think it's possible to not know those emotions," Sookie said thoughtfully. "People aren't robots. But to act on 'em? I think it's unreasonable, but it's a test of your willpower. We ask the same thing of monks and nuns and stuff, right?"

Temari was there and looking... maybe friendly enough for a hello.

Probably not.

Zayne was there and looking friendlier than Temari.

This was probably not a surprise.

If I was going to be in town this weekend, I would say he could give Joan detention for bringing up the newspaper article... but since I'm not, if he'd want to do something, I'm open for suggestions :D
