Ethics [Tuesday, March 10, 2nd period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"Dude, people feel things, that's what makes us people," Hurley said. "Without that, we'd be, like... robots or something."

"Jedi weren't droids," Anakin replied with a smile, "and we rely heavily on our instincts and our feelings when we make decisions. Which is why we can't allow one person or place to be more important than any other--it puts us off balance and puts our decision-making into question."

"So?" Hurley said. "Being totally impartial just makes you... cold and stuff."

"Which is something that is preferable in beings charged with high-level negotiations, weapons that whack off limbs and almost unfathomable levels of mental powers," Anakin replied. "Do you really want those sorts to be reacting purely on their whims?"

"But how many of them are actually like that?" Hurley said. "I mean, you kinda... aren't, Master Skywalker-dude."

Anakin arched up an eyebrow. "I'm not?"

"I mean, how else could there be a little Skywalker at the school?" Hurley said.

Anakin shrugged a shoulder. "On that particular aspect, I was a terrible Jedi."

"And, you're kinda awesome," Hurley said. "Kinda proving that the rules are kinda weird."

"The rules were there for a reason," Anakin said. "I just didn't like the reason."

"I just... dunno. The idea of emotionless superdudes kinda scares me," Hurley said.

"It's lightyears better than ones fueled by rage," Anakin replied. "Trust me on that."

"Yeah, I guess," Hurley said. "But it's just... I dunno. I mean, if they don't love anything, what stops them from... killing innocent people to save... other innocent people?"

"Everything is connected to everything else," Anakin replied. "A Jedi sees that more clearly than most people." His eyes focused inward. "But we still get stuck making those kinds of impossible decisions. We use what we have for defense, but we can't save everyone, much as we want to."

"Yeah, I guess... I wouldn't really be cool with anyone who had to make those decisions," Hurley said.

"Someone has to," Anakin said.
