Ethics [Tuesday, March 10, 2nd period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"But there is a difference between being warned of the dangers of these manipulations and being told to not feel it at all," Temari said, nodding as well. "Especially to a child."

"Back home, we are trained to have emotional control in a fight. That our one and only loyalty is to our Kage. Coming here--my control is less than I would like."

"Differing loyalties now?" Anakin guessed.

"My Kage is my brother. My loyalty to him will never be in question," Temari replied vehemently. "But if I was asked to eliminate some threat here, someone I've grown close to... I don't know if I could."

Anakin nodded, looking completely serious. "Do you miss the clarity?"

"It's not always a bad thing," Anakin said. "Fandom took off some of my edges, helped provide other perspectives."

"I plan on returning home," Temari replied. "Softness will get me killed."

"I went back, too," Anakin replied. "You'll compensate, or you'll stop making friends. It's your choice."

"And then you returned here," Temari pointed out.

"After many years," Anakin replied. "My generation of Jedi are gone." Not that he had anything to do with that. Really. "It's time for a new group to take their place. My son is working on that. I'll stay here, out of the way."

"My generation is the new group. I never actually thought I'd live to see it, though," Temari admitted dispassionately.

"I've heard that a lot," Anakin said. From teenagers. If he stopped to think about it, he'd be depressed. "Big, ugly war?"

"Before my generation, actually. The war of my father and his father," Temari said. "We simply live with the consequences and try to clean up the mess left behind."

Like the rivalries with other villages that nearly turned to war again.

"The older generation excels at leaving messes," Anakin said, nodding. "Mine managed to break an entire galaxy twice in forty years."

"My father's attempted to make weapons of their children," She informed him with a wan smile.

Anakin's eyes looked horrified before his expression flicked back to his normal iron control. "How?"

"We have demons back home. Nine great ones of unimaginable power and evil," Temari said, looking away. "To keep people safe, they were sealed away. Into Jinchuuriki. The great human sacrifice."

"A living prison for the creatures," Temari confirmed. "My brother was one of them."

This was easily one of the more horrifying things he'd ever heard. "How long did they remain a living prison?" he asked carefully.

"Until someone tries to remove the demon. Or they're no longer useful as a weapon."

There had been others before Gaara.

"And how are they used as weapons?" Anakin asked.

"The demon wants to live as badly as we do. If the prison dies, they die. So they will protect it at all costs."

She assumed he could figure that one out.
