Ethics [Tuesday, March 10, 2nd period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"Well, they couldn't stop you from falling in love, right?" Joan asked. "I mean, that interview I read in the paper said that you were married and having a baby."

It said a lot more than that and Joan's cheeks flushed red with embarrassment just thinking about it.

Anakin was just going to ignore the part about the newspaper article, yes. "Maybe I'm not a very good Jedi," he replied.

"What makes you so different than the rest of them?" Joan asked. "I think it seems unreasonable to try to dictate how people can feel."

"I came to the Order a lot later than most of the other apprentices," Anakin replied, "so their teachings didn't stick in certain areas."

"I bet it makes you a better Jedi though," Joan said. "Because you care more and it's more than just a duty."

Anakin hid a flinch as he shook his head. "Not at all. The Jedi I worked with were extraordinarily dedicated beings. It's not a job, or a duty--it's a calling. It's who you are, not what you do."
