Library [09/25]

It was a very annoyed Sam Winchester who opened the library in the morning. His date with Peter had been foiled and he'd gone back to his room feeling like a complete idiot.

And then he'd woken up with breasts. Again.

As much as he wanted to do nothing more than hide in his room, Sam took his job seriously enough to show up and get settled behind the desk. Without Dawn this time around, he had no access to girl clothes, so he'd had to do his best with the smallest clothes he owned. He hoped that if he stayed behind the desk, no one would notice he wasn't wearing shoes. Or a bra.

He could already tell it was going to be an unbearable day.

Being called skinny only made Sam glare more. "Not today, I'm not."

"Today you're a girl with breasts?" Jess asked, still trying to understand.

"Yes, and you should really stop staring at them if you don't want me to use you to find out whether or not I can kick someone's ass with this body," Sam said. "Now, are you going to tell me what you're doing here? I'm assuming you haven't come for a book."

"I have plenty of my own books, thanks," Jess deadpanned. He still wasn't positive that he was talking to Sam, but he supposed the conversation would make that clear. "I need your help."

"You're asking me for help?" Sam said, scoffing. "Yeah, okay, I'll get right on that."

"I need help with Peter," Jess clarified. "This is something that's in your best interest too."

Sam looked annoyed for a moment, before giving in. "All right, what's this about Peter?"

"I need to know how to get him to leave me alone," Jess said. "He seems to think that because we look alike that we're super tight friends or something, and he's starting to freak me out."

"Have you tried asking him to leave you alone?" Sam asked. Logic and common sense occasionally worked on Peter, after all.

"Oh, yeah, I came all the way over here to talk to you without telling him to leave," Jess said sarcastically. "Of course I've asked him, over and over again. But he just keeps coming back, whining about how I need to stop pushing people away because he knows me or something and knows that's not what I want. He's making me crazy."

Sam tried very hard, but he couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"I'm so glad you think this is funny. I can't tell if he's screwing with me, or just disturbed," Jess said. "Can't you give him an ultimatum or something? Cut him off if he doesn't stay away from me? Because you can't possibly be okay with this; you like me about as much as I like you."

"You're right, I don't like you, and the idea of Peter spending any time with you kind of makes my skin crawl," Sam said. "But I'm his boyfriend, not his keeper. I'm not going to tell him who he can or can't hang out with. Odds are, he's really not screwing with you. He's just...being Peter."

"He's being a jackass," Jess replied. "I don't get him at all."

"You know, calling him names isn't exactly making me want to help you."

"You just said you wouldn't help me."

"No, I said I won't help you the way you want me to," Sam replied. "But if you sit down and shut up, I can try to help you understand. Peter's not like normal people, and you have to deal with him a lot differently than others."

Jess bit back all the annoyed comments he wanted to make, and sat down. "All right, I'm listening."

"Good," Sam said, going over to sit across from Jess. "Okay, so I'm sure this won't surprise you, but the first thing you need to know is that Peter is very stubborn. Very stubborn. When he gets an idea into his head, it's almost impossible to get out. So, if he thinks that you need friends, you're not going to be able to convince him that you don't."

"It's not just that he thinks I need them. It's that he thinks I want them," Jess said. "Specifically in the form of him."

"Okay, that's a good point number two: Peter is very loving, and he expects other people to want to be loved, or at least liked. The idea of loners, of people who like being alone, will never compute with him, so telling him that you don't want friends is just going to invoke the stubbornness because he's probably convinced you're wrong."

"He's totally convinced that I'm wrong," Jess said. "He keeps telling me he knows me when we've talked less than a handful of times and I do everything I can to not tell him anything about myself."

"That's probably not helping your cause either," Sam said. "You know he's empathic, right? I mean, he's really, really good at reading people. You might think he doesn't know you, but he probably understands more than you'd think, even if you do try to close yourself off."

Jess had to admit that a lot of this was finally starting to make sense. "He thinks I'm pathetic," he said, adding quickly, "and I'm not. He acts like I'm hopeless, like I have all these feelings and emotions that I'm dying to share, when I don't."

"Okay, here's two more things," Sam said. "First of all, Peter is the second coming of the patron saint of hopeless causes. If you've given him any reason to believe that you might need the smallest bit of help, he's going to try to help you. And second, part of being empathic is being emotional. He likes emotions, and he wants to talk about feelings. There's just no way to get around that."
