Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I
Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.
Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.
It was time for the picnic to begin!
[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
She didn't think there would be an emergency, but they didn't exactly come calling with a card and a bouquet of roses, now, did they?
You can do this, Abby Irene. It's not as if you didn't spend enough time in school.
She smiled winningly, charmingly in fact, and hoped that her students had never heard her name. It would make things easier, she figured.
At her feet, her terrier lay in the grass, content to watch all the people milling about. If they had heard her name, she figured, the dog might help to ease any fears.
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"Hey," he greeted. "Are you Abigail Garrett?"
[OOC: And now I flee to the land of SP.]
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
She looked him up and down somewhat skeptically once she'd righted herself and Mike was busy with his bowl.
"Which one would you happen to be?"
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"I'm Tyler Durden."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"A pleasure, Mr. Durden," she said with a nod. "My apologies for the brusqueness of the correction: I've never much liked my name shortened as such. I'm glad that you've managed to find me as I probably would have taken longer to find you."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
He glanced her up and down. "And I am going to take a wild guess that you aren't from around here."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"And here I thought I was the detective."
She laughed and shook her head, ending with a genuine friendly smile which she hoped might iron out a bit of her snappishness. It certainly wasn't his fault Richard was being an asshole. She'd even known he was an asshole when she'd fallen in love with him.
...perhaps this could use further consideration.
"As for my name, Garrett works as well. I'm used to being referred to as such. Whatever you're comfortable with."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"So what brings you to Fandom?"
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"My immediate superior has decided that my presence would be something of a hindrance for the time being and as such has sent me off to be someone else's trouble until such time as he realizes he's being... unwise."
If she'd known the company better, she might have said something stronger, but she liked to make something of a decent impression. The substitution, however, was somewhat obvious.
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"A lot of troublemakers end up here," he ventured. "Most of them are students, but the staff, well..." He gestured around himself. "It's an interesting mix."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
A curious look was turned on Tyler.
"Are you perhaps one of those troublemakers, or have they given me a saint to encourage good behavior? I don't know what the Duke of New Amsterdam might have told the administration."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"Did the Duke tell you this place was weird?"
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"He informed me of very little. I suppose he wanted me kept busy so I would be less inclined to return before instructed."
Which she might do anyway; while she would never disobey her superior unless it was a matter of honor or her greater vows, she would go around any orders if she possibly could.

"Mornin' to you, ma'am," Murdock tipped his ballcap a bit. "I'd ask if you were new, but since I ain't seen ya before, I figure it's kinda obvious," he grinned. "Murdock, HM. Welcome to Fandom!"
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"Thank you for the welcome, Mister Murdock. Detective Crown Investigator Abigail Irene Garrett," she provided in turn with a brief bow before holding out a hand for a shake, "Abigail Irene as I would also think you a teacher as opposed to a student."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"A Detective? Sounds cool. What kind of classes are you gonna teach? And feel free to call me Murdock."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"As I was told to keep my summer course relatively light, I decided to start with a basic survey class on cryptozoology," she told him. "If it turns out I'm here for longer, I'll probably do some classes on basic alchemy, the principles of thaumaturgy, perhaps a course on forensic sorcery."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"Wow. All those sound interestin'. I don't teach nothin' nowhere as impressive as that. Did flight last session, this time I'm doing mercenary type stuffs. Never can tell what some of these kids around here run into." He gave her a serious look. "You know, a lot of the students here ain't exactly what I'd call kids anymore. Some of 'em come from places that get them more experience than a lot of adults." He shook his head a bit, "I'm tryin' to give 'em somethin' that'll help them in the hopes they won't ever have a need to use it."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"He's my very best friend," she said with a small smile, petting his head herself.
Abby Irene straightened and looked at Murdock thoughtfully.
"I've never been one to shield people from the realities of life. It's never a kindness. Though I appreciate the information. The better informed one is, the better one can do one's job."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"That's good, I suppose." He was a bit divided on the subject, himself. Having his own bouts of escaping reality kind of made him biased. "But not everyone can handle it. Most of the kids here seem like they can, though."
"Anytime," he smiled. "I've only been here a few months, but I'll be happy to help you with anything."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"It's a nice place. And the manager, Mary Connell, is a sweet woman. Very helpful."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
She logged the name of Miss Connell in her memory. She would mention that Murdock had sent her.
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"And hopefully nothin' weird will hit too soon for ya."
Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2008 - 2.0)
"I seriously doubt anything here will trouble me overly much. I'm made of sterner stuff, as they say."
She looked out over the lawn at the other students and teachers and such.
"As my class is Wednesday, I will thankfully have a couple of days to get settled in before standing at the front of a classroom."
