Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

It almost was obvious from her clothes, really, though Tyler wouldn't have been able to pin it to a specific year.

"And it was 2018 when I did," he noted. "It's July 2008 here, though."

"...I see."

It was obvious enough that she was rearranging her perceptions to even consider this possibility. It was also obvious that she didn't seem particularly upset by the idea.

"A hundred and ten years from my own time. How interesting."

It would account for some of the oddities she'd heard from others.

Tyler raised an eyebrow. "Does this kind of thing happen a lot in your 1898?"

"No. But I have only three options:

"Believe you and think you a madman or a liar, of which the former seems unlikely and the latter would serve no purpose.

"Disbelieve you, which would discount all the inconsistencies I have encountered thus far in the dress, deportment, and other behaviors of those I've spoken to.

"Or believe you and think you are telling me the truth, which would in fact be supported by the behavior of Lemuria and Atlantis, as well as explaining the inconsistencies mentioned a moment before."

She smiled.

"Besides, there's no harm in believing what you say for the moment. I'll have at least this term to figure out if you are lying or not and arguing at this moment, with no further information, is not just foolish but a waste of time and resources."

Tyler was not used to being on the receiving end of lectures, so he looked equal measures startled and amused when Abigail Irene finished.

"Okay then," he said, a little under his breath. "On the same theory, may as well tell you this place is some kind of dimensional nexus and we get pretty much any oddity you can imagine, from Jello dragons to Greek hellgod principals to tiny dancing lemurs. Oh, and at least one of the kids in your class will show up as an animal some week."

"Fair enough," she said, chin up. She'd take whatever came head on and whatever happened happened. She wasn't foolishly brave, would face no danger that wasn't necessary or charge in unthinking, but she wasn't scared of the unusual or the unknown. That was just ridiculous.

"It's never dull," he said sincerely.

"Did you have questions for me? About teaching, or ... anything?"

She considered that for a moment.

"I don't believe in corporal punishment," she said with a shake of her head. "And will not employ it. That won't be a problem, will it?"

"I think you'd end up in Principal Washburn's office explaining why you should keep your job the second after your hand went near a kid," Tyler responded. "Some of them richly deserve it, but corporal punishment's pretty much not done here. So that will fit in fine."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Hmm."

It was an approving noise, though one that spoke of curiosity as well. Another mark to the tally towards her judgment on this place. Whether she was out of time at the moment or not. It certainly spoke for that theory.

"I'm glad to see that in the future, educators have learned a thing or two as well as students. I am assuming, however, that detentions are still used?"

"When the administration manages to hold one," Tyler nodded. "I only had to give one so far. Some girl felt the need to make it clear how stupid she thought I was for not letting her pretend to kill civilians."

Which reminded him of something. "You should know about Danger Shop. Tell the computer what you want, and it sets up a really good simulation of it. It's like walking into computer animation. I have no idea where they got the technology."

"It sounds absolutely fascinating," she told him with a slightly oversweet smile.

"You will have to tell me what a 'computer' is, however."

Tyler gave her a blank look.

Then he remembered she was from 1898.

"It's a ..." right, he could explain this; it just required he pretended he didn't know what one was, which took some mental gyrations. "Box," he finally said. "That kind of makes things happen. You can play games or do math, write letters, build weapons, read books on this thing called the Internet ... Look, when you get your office number, let me know and I'll walk you through it."

"Does it run on magic or technology?"

It would, at least, give her a kind of framework to set her assumptions on.

"Technology," he said, then, clarifying. "Electricity."

"I had assumed," she said with a brief smile.

"Well... you will have to explain that strange little glamourbox to me sometime next week. I have no class on Monday, if you'd like to do so then handwavily or not?"
tyler_gone: (perfectly sane)

"Mondays are normally my office days anyhow," Tyler told her. "I'll stop by when you're set up."

"Sounds just fine to me," she said with a nod of her head.
