Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Mike's stub of a tail bounced back and forth.

"He's my very best friend," she said with a small smile, petting his head herself.

Abby Irene straightened and looked at Murdock thoughtfully.

"I've never been one to shield people from the realities of life. It's never a kindness. Though I appreciate the information. The better informed one is, the better one can do one's job."

"I got a dog too. Most people tend to overlook him, though." Probably because he didn't actually exist.

"That's good, I suppose." He was a bit divided on the subject, himself. Having his own bouts of escaping reality kind of made him biased. "But not everyone can handle it. Most of the kids here seem like they can, though."

"Anytime," he smiled. "I've only been here a few months, but I'll be happy to help you with anything."

"Would you happen to know a reputable hotel where I might stay for a few days as I arrange my household?" Or let Mary arrange it for her, for the most part. "I'm afraid that while my superior arranged for my position here, he did not make accommodations for me."

"Oh sure! I'm stayin' there myself right now. The Arms Hotel (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/2932845.html) at the other end of the island. There's usually somebody workin' each day. They'll be happy to set up you, I'm sure."

"It's a nice place. And the manager, Mary Connell, is a sweet woman. Very helpful."

"I am sure it will serve my needs. I haven't had time to travel around this island much as I wanted to be here on time."

She logged the name of Miss Connell in her memory. She would mention that Murdock had sent her.

"Oh yah," he nodded. "They don't give you a whole lot of time or notice of these things. I didn't get set up myself until after the picnic either. But no worries," he grinned, "You'll have some time to look around during the week. As long as you do your class on time and some office hours, there's plenty of time to explore."

"And hopefully nothin' weird will hit too soon for ya."

She chuckled.

"I seriously doubt anything here will trouble me overly much. I'm made of sterner stuff, as they say."

She looked out over the lawn at the other students and teachers and such.

"As my class is Wednesday, I will thankfully have a couple of days to get settled in before standing at the front of a classroom."

"I've found that often helps," he grinned. "Either that or a good solid dose of insanity." Invasions by penguins didn't seem too strange at all when one was used to seeing giant fish.

"Hey; mine's then too. In the afternoon. Maybe we'll run into each other between classes or somethin'."

"My own class is first thing in the morning."

She considered him for a moment, considered how her idea might be taken by the gentleman, and finally just decided it was worth a shot.

"Perhaps we could share lunch after my class and before yours?"

"I suppose that's a bonus. Get it done and out of the way. That is if you're a mornin' person. I imagine some of the students are very not," he chuckled.

He gave her a wide smile. "Sure! I'd love that! I've met a number of the other teachers, but don't often get a chance to hang out with 'em much. There's a number of places in town that offer great stuff. A couple of diners and the pizza shop. Whatever you'd be up for, I'm game."

"Hopefully, they'll find the subject interesting enough to keep them awake," she said, not about to say one way or the other until she met her students.

"And I would be happy to let you pick the location. As you would know better than I would."

"It certainly sounds interestin' to me," he grinned. "And I tend to be a mornin' person anyway." That is, when he wasn't recovering from a mission or encounters with Gods.

"Great!" he grinned. "There's a new-er place in town that I haven't had a chance to check out yet. Seems like lunch would be a good opportunity."

"A bit of harmless adventure sounds like just the thing," she agreed. "Shall we meet there or here?"

"We can handwavily meet here and then I'll escort you over. I'm sure you'll be more familiar with the place by then, but it can't hurt to have a tour guide, eh?" he grinned.

"I look forward it to, dear lady," he tipped his hat and bowed slightly.

She smiled and there was a bit more warmth to it now.

"As do I."
