Library [03/03]

As much as Sam had enjoyed being in Mexico - he'd enjoyed most of the trip, at least - it felt good to be back in the library. Of course, it would have felt better if he'd been able to get his shoes on in the morning, but he wasn't about to try to argue with his sneakers before he'd had any coffee.

"Pretty good," Peter said, with a smile to back that statement up. "Had a nice time on the beach yesterday. I was going to tell you but figured your hangover got to come first."

"Hey, you could have told me while you were helping me feel better," Sam pointed out.

"For some reason you didn't strike me as being up for conversation," Peter said.

"I still could have listened," Sam said, leaning on the desk. "But since you waited, I'm perfect for conversing now."

"Good." Peter popped another piece of donut into his mouth. "So yesterday she took me skinny-dipping."

"She..." Sam started, trailing off as he just stared at Peter. "Where?"

"Private spot on the beach," Peter said. "Nobody was around, least so far as I could see."

"But...the beach isn't totally private! You could have gotten caught!"

"We were in the water," Peter said, as though this were perfectly reasonable. And totally ignored the part about getting in and out of the water without clothes on.

"Naked in the water!" Sam said, like that wasn't obvious. "Was it...I mean, did you have fun?"

"That would be the definition of skinny dipping," Peter said, a little bemused at Sam's reaction. He raked a hand through his hair. "And... yeah. Lots."

He cleared his throat.

If anything, Sam's eyes widened even more. "Tell me you didn't. In public?"

"Okay, I won't," Peter said, reasonably enough.

Sam reached over and tried to swat Peter on the arm. "Dude, other people have to swim in that ocean too. And again, I ask what if you'd gotten caught?"

Peter flicked part of a rolled up-napkin at Sam. "It was pretty private. If anybody saw us, they didn't say anything."

"You're so lucky you didn't get into trouble. Think of the field day Nathan would have had rescuing you and Brooke from the Mexican police."

"Could've turned us both invisible," Peter pointed out. He sipped his coffee. "Not that that would've helped with our clothes and all but at least it's a getaway."

"I guess that would have worked," Sam admitted. "I still can't believe you actually did that, though. You've got serious guts."

"I'm a little surprised myself," Peter admitted. "But Brooke can make a convincing argument."

Sam laughed. "I'm going to assume this wasn't an entirely verbal argument?"

"It's a fair assumption," Peter said, grinning.

"You seem really happy," Sam said, with a grin of his own.

"It's nice to have something low-key, you know?" Peter said. "No worries about the future, just taking it as it comes."

"If that's what you like, then I'm happy you're getting it," Sam said.

"It wasn't what I was looking for, but I'm glad now that it's here," Peter said. "If that makes any sense."
