Adah allowed her smirk to slip out. "I certainly can't argue that point."

"I didn't think you would," he said and returned her smile. "After all, you wouldn't tell me your birthday, I'm not telling you any secrets of mine that yu don't already know."

Chuckling a little, Adah realized that she'd nearly forgotten about the birthday thing. "Have you made any progress on that, by the way?" she wondered, curiously amused.

"Maybe," Lee lied. "Maybe I know and I'm keeping it a secret too."

"You know I'm only going to take that as you pretty much admitting that you haven't got a clue," Adah pointed out, fondly.

"No, I have a clue," he said, nodding. "I have a one in twelve chance of guessing the right month."

"You," Adah pronounced with particular amusement, grinning at the Eel with a little, contemplating lean forward, "are just incredibly on the ball today. I'm impressed."

"I know, I know, I'm very impressive," he said and buffed his nails on his shirt. "After I narrow the month down, then I just have to pick about thirty one or so days and I'll have it."

"Well, I suppose if you're satisfied," Adah sighed with exaggeration, "with knowing you figured it out based on pure dumb luck rather than your own ingenuity...."

"Yes, but I would have figured it out," he reminded her. "That would be the important part."

"The ends," Adah asked with lofty conviction and the lowered, determined voice she would liken belonging to ancient philosophers gamboling about the Forum in their robes, challenging their conversationalist's view as if insulting his virility, "then, are all that matter, and the means be damned?"

"Sometimes," he said vaguely. "Sometimes not."

Adah snorted a small laugh. "You're going to be a philosopher one day, aren't you?"

"In my spare time," Lee said, nodding. "Fly by day, wax poetic by night."

"Ah, but it's afternoon," Adah pointed out. As soon as she said it, she had in mind what she would have argued with and watched the Eel expectantly, wondering if he'd make the same point.

"Then, I'd fly while waxing poetic," he decided. "Combination of both."

No, not where Adah would have taken it, but amusing all the same. She feigned a skeptical, disbelieving look. "At the same time?" she gasped, with a small inkling of a wish that part of her outrageousness at the possibility wasn't genuine.

"Why not?" Lee asked. "It'd just be like talking and flying. My hands do one thing and my mouth does the other."

Adah settled a look at the Eel. "Sometimes two things at once are difficult," she reminded him. "Especially for me, you know that. Besides, with your hands doing one thing and your mouth doing another, then you're energies are focused there, and your brain," depending on her hip against the desk, she reached over to poke at his forehead, "is probably doing nothing."

"On the contrary," he said, laughing quietly, "my brain is always working. Sometimes, it's working in crazy ways but it's always working. I am very good at delegating focus."

"Yeah," Adah muttered, her eyes on the Eel's hair line, where her fingers seemed to have thought the poke was an excuse to lead into lightly, idly playing with the short strands there. "I would hope so, you people with your fully working brains. If you didn't get use out of it, it would just be mean and unfair."

"I have an active brain," he said quietly, leaning a little closer to her. "And soft hair."

Adah grinned at the closeness, her fingers emboldening themselves to be less discreet about their intentions for running through the Eel's hair, like both their fingers had done in the grass when they first met. "Do you think," she asked lightly, "that they're often related, active brains and soft hair?"

"Dunno," he answered quietly, eyes closing at the sensation of her hands in his hair. "Maybe? Or maybe I just got lucky in that department."

"I think," Adah's grin sharpened, and her voice became very important-sounding, as if her opinion was clearly one which mattered well above all others, "that you got lucky in a lot of things."
