Normally, Sam let the counter stay between them, but that didn't seem like such a good idea right now. "What's wrong?" he asked, coming around right next to Peter.

"Nathan and I turned into us," Peter said, figuring Sam knew about the wackiness from the weekend. "From the future."

"Wow," Sam said. "I take it your glimpse of the future wasn't entirely pleasant?"

"Nathan dies," Peter said. Saying the words out loud felt wrong. Like he was giving it permission to happen. "And I turn into some kind of bomb that blows up New York."

Sam eyes widened as he grabbed Peter by the shoulders. "You what?"

"It was some kind of crazy serial killer," Peter said, having both his own priorities and selective hearing. "He was pretending to be Nathan."

"What about the you being a bomb part? 'Cause I'd really like to know more about that," Sam replied.

"I went nuclear?" Peter said. The memories on this part were fuzzy. "I couldn't control my powers which - huge shock, right?"

"That's...that can't happen," Sam said firmly. "Not like that. You have more control than that, you know you do."

"Don't have that power yet," Peter said, with an ironic sort of hope. "That's something, right?"

"Maybe you won't ever have it. Maybe it was some kind of weird future," Sam said. "I mean, Dean and I turned into dolls for God's sake. This stuff doesn't always make sense."

"Nathan was president," Peter said. Because that part made a lot of sense to him.

"Okay, that might happen," Sam said, because he could imagine that too. "But that doesn't mean everything else will. You'd do anything to keep Nathan from dying, wouldn't you?"

There was that sick feeling again. "It can't," Peter said, looking like he'd been stabbed in the gut. "God, Sam - he was gone and I hadn't stopped it, I didn't even know - "

"It's not real," Sam said, running his hands along Peter's arms to try to keep him calm. "It was just some Fandom weirdness. Nathan's okay now, right?" He knew full well that Peter wouldn't have come to him before his brother.

Peter nodded. "He's alive. I saw him this morning. But it happened. That was our future."

Peter looked like standing might not be in his best interests right now.

"You don't know that," Sam said. Seeing that standing wasn't such a good idea anymore, he led Peter over to one of the tables and sat him down, taking the seat next to him for himself. "It might not be your future at all."

"All he wanted to do was protect me," Peter said. He slumped into his chair, wrapping his hands around his stomach. "He even lied. Said it wasn't me who did it."

"Who...blew up?" Sam asked, feeling a little sick at the mere thought of that happening.

Peter nodded.

Sam put his hands on Peter's shoulders again. "That's not going to happen. Nathan won't let it. I won't let it."

"Promise?" Peter asked, looking up at him. "I can't lose Nathan, Sam. I can't."

Sam was a lot more focused on not losing Peter, but he was willing to look out for Nathan too in this case. "I promise. You guys are going to be fine. Now that you know what could possibly happen, you can do things to make sure it doesn't."

Peter reached up to put his hands over Sam's. "Just keep telling me that, okay?"

"I will, I promise," Sam said, smiling softly. "Winchesters protect the people they care about. It's practically family law."
