Sam was doing his best to not think about the weekend as he went to open the library. He was working especially hard to not think about being in Dean's room the night before. There were certain things little brothers just didn't need to know about their big brothers.

"Wait, cheerleader Claire?" Sam asked, staring as his mind kept going. "Claire who you almost kissed?"

"Yep," Peter said, and facepalming seemed to be a great thing to do. "Because apparently in addition to destroying New York I also want to recreate Greek tragedy."

"I take back everything I ever said about the two of you being a good couple," Sam said. "Wait, how is she your niece?"

"You thought that? I don't need to know you thought that." Of course Peter had briefly thought it too, but that was neither here nor there.

He finally looked up. "Nathan - there was this girl. Then there was a kid. Then there was an accident. You know, besides the one with the condom." Peter gave another ironic smile, unable to get his humor to be less than morbid at the moment.

"They died. Or that's what we thought. Turns out in Claire's world - and in that future Nathan and I saw - not so much."

"Wow," Sam said softly. "I didn't...I never would have imagined Nathan...does Claire suspect anything, do you think?"

"He'd never walk away," Peter said. He rubbed his thumb along the corner of the table they were stitting at. "I don't think they were gonna get married or anything but - he's not that kinda guy. And I'm pretty sure Claire doesn't know."

"Are you guys going to tell her?" Sam asked. He couldn't imagine Peter keeping something like this a complete secret, but he honestly wasn't sure about Nathan.

"Of course." Peter looked like how on earth could you not tell Claire? "She might not be this Nathan's, but she still deserves to know, you know?"

"I completely agree," Sam said. "I just wanted to make sure you felt the same way, that's all."

"It can't be coincidence," Peter said. "Her being here, us being here. We may not be directly related, but it's got to count for something."

"Maybe it's a good thing you're all together," Sam said. "Good things are possible, you know."

"I was thinking maybe it's about changing the future," Peter said. He looked up at Sam from under his bangs, not bothering to push them out of his way. "Like... maybe this is our chance to make it different?"

"Oh, sure, now you think you can change the future," Sam said, teasing. "I think that's a very good chance."

Peter hid behind his hair some more. Mostly out of habit than anything else. "I could change time. Sorta."

The urge to push Peter's hair out of his face was great, but Sam managed to restrain himself. "What do you mean?"

"This weekend," Peter said. "It was one of my powers. I could stop time."

"Seriously?" Sam said, grinning. "Wow. Was it as awesome as it sounds?"

He wanted to be nothing but emo. He really did.

Still...

"Yeah," he admitted, finally tucking his hair behind his ear.

"Well, then I hope that's a part of the future that won't change," Sam said. Anything that got Peter to cheer up a little could stay.

"It was weird," Peter admitted. "Some of my powers I had, and others I didn't. Like I could turn invisible, and I could fly, but I couldn't unlock doors."

"Maybe you're right. Maybe that was the future that would have happened if you and Nathan and Claire hadn't come here," Sam said.

"I hope so," Peter said. "There's no way I could go through that again."

"You won't," Sam said firmly. "There's no way I'm letting you go through that."

Peter gave him a small smile. "Thank you. It means a lot."

"Hey, I know that if I saw the future and thought that Dean might die, you'd help me stop it too," Sam said. "That's what best friends are for."
