Library [01/21]

Sam was doing his best to not think about the weekend as he went to open the library. He was working especially hard to not think about being in Dean's room the night before. There were certain things little brothers just didn't need to know about their big brothers.

"It's not real," Sam said, running his hands along Peter's arms to try to keep him calm. "It was just some Fandom weirdness. Nathan's okay now, right?" He knew full well that Peter wouldn't have come to him before his brother.

Peter nodded. "He's alive. I saw him this morning. But it happened. That was our future."

Peter looked like standing might not be in his best interests right now.

"You don't know that," Sam said. Seeing that standing wasn't such a good idea anymore, he led Peter over to one of the tables and sat him down, taking the seat next to him for himself. "It might not be your future at all."

"All he wanted to do was protect me," Peter said. He slumped into his chair, wrapping his hands around his stomach. "He even lied. Said it wasn't me who did it."

"Who...blew up?" Sam asked, feeling a little sick at the mere thought of that happening.

Peter nodded.

Sam put his hands on Peter's shoulders again. "That's not going to happen. Nathan won't let it. I won't let it."

"Promise?" Peter asked, looking up at him. "I can't lose Nathan, Sam. I can't."

Sam was a lot more focused on not losing Peter, but he was willing to look out for Nathan too in this case. "I promise. You guys are going to be fine. Now that you know what could possibly happen, you can do things to make sure it doesn't."

Peter reached up to put his hands over Sam's. "Just keep telling me that, okay?"

"I will, I promise," Sam said, smiling softly. "Winchesters protect the people they care about. It's practically family law."

That coaxed a small smile out of him. "Yeah - guess what else I found out?"

Sam tried to think of some kind of guess that would make Peter laugh, but he ended up drawing a blank. "I don't know, what?"

"Promise you won't tell anyone?" Peter asked. "But turns out I've got a relative here at school."

"Besides Nathan?" Sam asked. "You know I never tell anyone your secrets."

"Yeah, I just - this person doesn't know it yet either," Peter said. "So I'd hate for it to come from anyone but me, you know? And yeah. A niece. Named Claire."

"Wait, cheerleader Claire?" Sam asked, staring as his mind kept going. "Claire who you almost kissed?"

"Yep," Peter said, and facepalming seemed to be a great thing to do. "Because apparently in addition to destroying New York I also want to recreate Greek tragedy."

"I take back everything I ever said about the two of you being a good couple," Sam said. "Wait, how is she your niece?"

"You thought that? I don't need to know you thought that." Of course Peter had briefly thought it too, but that was neither here nor there.

He finally looked up. "Nathan - there was this girl. Then there was a kid. Then there was an accident. You know, besides the one with the condom." Peter gave another ironic smile, unable to get his humor to be less than morbid at the moment.

"They died. Or that's what we thought. Turns out in Claire's world - and in that future Nathan and I saw - not so much."

"Wow," Sam said softly. "I didn't...I never would have imagined Nathan...does Claire suspect anything, do you think?"

"He'd never walk away," Peter said. He rubbed his thumb along the corner of the table they were stitting at. "I don't think they were gonna get married or anything but - he's not that kinda guy. And I'm pretty sure Claire doesn't know."

"Are you guys going to tell her?" Sam asked. He couldn't imagine Peter keeping something like this a complete secret, but he honestly wasn't sure about Nathan.

"Of course." Peter looked like how on earth could you not tell Claire? "She might not be this Nathan's, but she still deserves to know, you know?"

"I completely agree," Sam said. "I just wanted to make sure you felt the same way, that's all."
