"Quiet time spent with family... that's going to be interrupted by however many parties Ma thinks she needs to throw or drag us to," Peter replied. "I may try to take advantage of the invisibility there."

Sam laughed. "I guess that's one benefit to having a dad who isn't very social," he said. "But that's a good use for the invisibility."

"Ma and Nathan love it," Peter said. He took a bite of donut. "Me? I like parties with friends."

"You're not big on randomly socializing with people you hardly know?" Sam teased. "I can't imagine why."

"Hate small talk, hate the fakeness." Peter made a face. "Hate the people who pretend to be friends."

"Do you get that a lot?" Sam asked. "People who want to pretend like they're close to your family, I mean?"

Peter shrugged, looking self-conscious. "Depends on the setting."

"Well, at least you know you don't have to worry about that here," Sam said.

"Definitely not here," Peter added with a smile and a nod that indicated "here" meant "in the library."

"Definitely not," Sam agreed. "I mean, it's not like I have a plan to use you to get to see the coolest things in New York someday or anything. That would just be mean."

"Works out nice," Peter said. "'cause it's not like I've got a plan to make you suck up to me so you can get to those things."

"Am I allowed to know what this sucking up entails?" Sam asked. "Or do I just have to be awesome to you in general?"

"You can start by being awesome to me in general," Peter said. "I'll then update you with specifics depending on your performance."

"That sounds fair," Sam said. "Have I told you how much I appreciate you bringing me coffee and food every week? Because I do."

"Nah, go on," Peter said, grinning.

"You make my whole afternoon brighter and easier to deal with?" he added. "And you're good company."

"Nice," Peter said, appreciatively. "For that you can get a donut."

"Thank you," Sam said, taking his reward. "I'll have to practice to make sure my sucking up skills stay in shape."

"Would this be a good time to ask what you're getting me for Christmas?" Peter asked, adding in puppy eyes just in case that would help.

"You can ask, but I'm not telling you," Sam replied. "There's still a whole 15 days until Christmas!"

Peter heaved a woeful sigh.

"You're worse than Dean, I swear." Sam snickered. "I can tell you it's something I think you'll like."

"I'd hope so," Peter said with a grin. "Otherwise it's a waste of money for you."

"Good point," Sam said. "Are you going to tell me what you got me for Christmas?"

"Empty box," Peter replied. "I hope you don't have one already."
