There was a tall, military-looking redhead - better known to most as Lieutenant Kerrigan - in a sleek metal suit tapping her foot against the floor of the Danger Shop and looking just this side of incredibly annoyed.

"Listen, children, you're obviously here because you did something incredibly stupid. Today, I am going to show - not tell - you how incredibly dumb that is, and how incredibly dead you are going to be should you do something stupid again. Shut up, don't talk, and get the hell into the sim before I personally decide to nail your butts to the wall."

She pointed at a projector on the wall.

"If your name's not on there, get the hell out of my Danger Shop. If it is and you're not here, then I'm talking to thin air and I'll hunt you down myself. GET!"

Stupid people brought out the military in her.

In front of the gate, two marines are standing around babbling about the weather. They look like they might be doing something stupid, soon.

"I'm tellin' you, Sarge," one of them was prattling, "I saws me a Hydra out there that was the size of a freakin' house."

"You sure about that?" the sergeant replied, before noticing Ed up ahead. "Hey, kid!"

"I'm not a...!" Edward took a deep breath. "...Yeah?"

"This idiot over there claims he's seen a Hydralisk bigger'n a... what was it? Skyscraper?" The sergeant was giving the other marine the stink eye.

"You look like a good'n able bodied young kid, you wanna go out there and settle this thing so we can all go home? We'll just open up the gates, take a quick peek around."

"Kid! Don't stand there gapin' like a fish, get over here!" The sergeant was not in a good mood.

"Go easy on 'im, Sarge," the marine by his side said, "Kid looks like he's goin' gray early."

After staying back to observe the marines for a moment, Lee walked up and smiled at them.

"Morning!" Might as well try the polite way.

"I'm just sayin', if we took just a little peek we could just give the all clear and turn in early for a decent night's sleep."

"Listen, Pete, that is by far the dumbest thing in a long line of dumb things I've ever heard you say. Now shut up."

The sergeant turned his attention to Lee. "Mornin', kid, anything up?"

"I think I'm gettin' early arthr'tis," the marine whined, "This armor's hangin' way down on me lately."

The sergeant rolled his eyes. "Still got a couple more hours to go, stupid [feedback] guard duty. You tourin' the premises with your folks or somethin'? They bring 'em in young these days."

"Sarge, you know we gotta!" Pete might have been squealing. Except not quite.

The sergeant was unable to reach his brow because of the helmet, so he put his giant metal hand on said helmet instead. "I am not going to--"

"Hey, look! Girl! Come over here!" Pete was waving his own giant metal hand enthusiastically.

"Me an' Sarge here have a bet going," Pete was grinning, "He says there ain't no way we're finding out about anythin' goin' on behind the gate 'cause we're posted here."

"That wasn't a bet," the sergeant informed him, "Those were your orders."

Pete ignored him. "Y'wanna help out, check it out? I got five bucks if you do!"

"That's an incredibly stupid idea," the sergeant informed him.

Gates were, generally, built for a good reason after all.
