Detention, Saturday, September 22

There was a tall, military-looking redhead - better known to most as Lieutenant Kerrigan - in a sleek metal suit tapping her foot against the floor of the Danger Shop and looking just this side of incredibly annoyed.

"Listen, children, you're obviously here because you did something incredibly stupid. Today, I am going to show - not tell - you how incredibly dumb that is, and how incredibly dead you are going to be should you do something stupid again. Shut up, don't talk, and get the hell into the sim before I personally decide to nail your butts to the wall."

She pointed at a projector on the wall.

"If your name's not on there, get the hell out of my Danger Shop. If it is and you're not here, then I'm talking to thin air and I'll hunt you down myself. GET!"

Stupid people brought out the military in her.

"I'm just sayin', if we took just a little peek we could just give the all clear and turn in early for a decent night's sleep."

"Listen, Pete, that is by far the dumbest thing in a long line of dumb things I've ever heard you say. Now shut up."

The sergeant turned his attention to Lee. "Mornin', kid, anything up?"

"Nope," he said, nodding at them both. "You guys tired? Been a long night?"

"I think I'm gettin' early arthr'tis," the marine whined, "This armor's hangin' way down on me lately."

The sergeant rolled his eyes. "Still got a couple more hours to go, stupid [feedback] guard duty. You tourin' the premises with your folks or somethin'? They bring 'em in young these days."

"Uh, yeah," Lee said, going with it. "Yeah. They wanted me to see the brave guys that protected and served. Show me what type of man I should grow up to be."

"Think you can do us a favor?" Pete the Marine asked, excitably.

"Oh for the love of--" The sergeant was facepalming in a large, armored kind of way.

"Sure!" Lee grinned and nodded. "Anytime."

"We're only patrollin' 'cause some dumbass claims there's Zerg out there," Pete went on to expain as the sergeant stood by, shaking his head, "If we can get an all-clear on the outside, we can just turn in an' go home. However, someone won't let us leave our post. Y'wanna go out there an' check?"

"Where's out there?" Lee asked. "Through the gate?"

Lee was exposed to the full force of a double-marine 'Well, duh,' face.

"Just poke your head in an' out, we keep up the rear," Pete declared.

"All right," Lee said, nodding. "I can do that. I'm just a little slow, sorry guys. I'm just in hero worship mode."

Pete gave him a thumbs up. The sergeant whapped him over the head. "It's nice to see good young boys like you ready to serve the Confederacy," he told Lee, admiringly. "[feedback], OPEN THE [feedback] GATE!"

The gate slid open.

"Thanks guys!" Lee waved cheerfully and stepped through the gate. "I'll do my job!"

And then he stepped out of sight.

"Boy's father musta done somethin' right," the sergeant observed, "You don't see kids like that so often."

"Maybe if he does well he can take my job," Pete muttered.

"Nah, kid's probably gonna be up the wings one day. Hey, is that a--"

The base camp was quickly overrun with Zerg.
