There was a tall, military-looking redhead - better known to most as Lieutenant Kerrigan - in a sleek metal suit tapping her foot against the floor of the Danger Shop and looking just this side of incredibly annoyed.

"Listen, children, you're obviously here because you did something incredibly stupid. Today, I am going to show - not tell - you how incredibly dumb that is, and how incredibly dead you are going to be should you do something stupid again. Shut up, don't talk, and get the hell into the sim before I personally decide to nail your butts to the wall."

She pointed at a projector on the wall.

Stupid people brought out the military in her.

"So I was sayin' to my boys-- Waaait." The sergeant's head went up as Jack ambled past. "Kid! What the hell's livin' on your head?"

"What?" He flails his fingers through his mullet hair. His fingers come up empty. "There's nothing on my head."

"That thing! That ain't regulation! What the hell's a civilian doin' down here?" The sergeant was making the presence of his gun very obvious. "You better have clearance, boy."

"I'm here on the tour. Uncle's stationed here, said it'd make a man outta me." He grinned.

"Yeaaah, I don't think so," the sergeant muttered, "But if you're so [feedback] int'ressed in bein' made a man of, how about you try takin' a gander at what's on the other side of that gate? [feedback] here seems t'think we got Zerg out there."

"I could do that," he said. "But why isn't he doing it?" he said, jerking at the other one. "What's my backup?"

"We can't have legitimate marines leavin' their post, boy," the sergeant said, drawling extra on the last part of that sentence. "We'll keep an eye on you from the rear, right?"

"Right, Sarge," Pete grinned.

"Fine. Gimme a gun or something. You don't expect to send me out there naked, do you? I'm sure your CO would love to hear about that. KP duty for life, I bet." Good thing about living around truckers? Pick up bluffing skills like no one's business.

Pete threw a gun at him. He may not have been entirely careful about it.

"Shaddup and get out there, son," the sergeant growled, "We'll see about the CO if ya don't get barbequed out there."

"It's yer can on the line," he said, catching the gun. Sorta. It didn't fall, at least. "Step aside, girls, let the man come through," he said, walking through the gate. That knocking sound? So not his knees.
