Flight and Flying [Thursday, August 23, 3rd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

Anakin, after shooting Rory a small smile, opened a closet to reveal a stack of Space Trooper outfits.

"These are not at all necessary," he said, focusing for a moment on his son, "but I know some of you are a little worried about actually being in space. We're completely safe in here, but if you feel like being extra cautious," he left the "and looking like an idiot" part unspoken, but it was in his tone, "feel free to suit up."

Anakin took the shuttle up into space himself. Not that he didn't trust some of the pilots in the group, but he trusted himself more.

"Before we begin taking turns flying the shuttle," he said, turning the shuttle around so that the Earth filled the viewports, "I wanted you to see what where we came from looks like from out here."

If Anakin doesn't think you're ready, he'll sit you back down, but if you have experience flying in space already, he'll let you have a go through here.

There's a lot of empty space between planets, fortunately. If this is your first time up in space, here's the place to try flying. Way, way far away from anything you can hit.

Way, way far away.

Who Anakin kept watching like she's going to disappear out from under him.

It's incredible, really, that he still hasn't learned how to let go.

Only not really.

Before he brought the shuttle back down to Earth, he stood in front of the students, eyes serious and hands tucked into the sleeves of his robes, Jedi to the inch.

"She can't hear us up here, so let me make this absolutely clear. Stay out of Umbridge's office. Stay off of her radar. It's not backing down, it's not letting her win, it's being smart. She is using her wand and she is trying to kill people. She just picked the wrong one on her first attempt." His lips were pressed together so hard they were white around the edges. "This isn't a game. This isn't a test to see how fantastically great you think you are. You stay. away. from. her. All of you."

Anakin's idea of a pep talk left something to be desired.

River Tam

River looked at the outfits and decided against putting one on. She smiled, thinking that Simon might have, though, just to be on the safe side.

Like any inhabitable planet Earth was beautiful from orbit. She'd also seen it recently from the moon, but that didn't mean it wasn't still pretty.

River nodded, being in complete agreement. She was not going back to Umbridge's office. It would have been nice to have been able to hold on to the kitten plate as a trophy though.

Asteroids! River grinned and reached for the controls. Wash had never let her fly Serenity through an asteriod belt.

Anemone

Andros

Andros decided that he would fly in empty space since he figured that it'd be very hard for him to get killed this way.

Anemone was trying very hard to sit still and not let her pride in the previous evening's actions go leaking out of her brain. Somehow she doubted Master Skywalker would be amused with their prank.

Well, he might be. After all, she hadn't gone in the office, and they had been very careful to stay away from the crazy lady. Still, she did her best to keep her glee internal.

Anakin slid into the seat next to her. "Ready?" he asked.

"Nobody's getting killed," Anakin said, slanting a glance over at Andros, "or even scraping the paint on my shuttle. Relax. It's just like the sim."

River turned her head and gave a quick nod in reply, then looked back out at the asteroids ahead.

He gave a quick run-through of the control panels, focusing on the proximity alert, which would go off if she got too close to a spinning asteroid, then leaned back in his seat. "Go ahead," he said quietly. "She's all yours."

Anakin caught some of it anyway and gave Anemone a flat stare. "Away from her," he repeated icily.

"I was." Anemone did her best to look contrite. "Crazy, not stupid."

River turned all her attention to the space ahead of them, advancing through the asteroid belt. She took no unnecessary risks - this was real after all - but flew close enough to be able to watch the barren rocks.
