Flight and Flying [Thursday, August 23, 3rd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

If Anakin doesn't think you're ready, he'll sit you back down, but if you have experience flying in space already, he'll let you have a go through here.

Asteroids! River grinned and reached for the controls. Wash had never let her fly Serenity through an asteriod belt.

Anakin slid into the seat next to her. "Ready?" he asked.

River turned her head and gave a quick nod in reply, then looked back out at the asteroids ahead.

He gave a quick run-through of the control panels, focusing on the proximity alert, which would go off if she got too close to a spinning asteroid, then leaned back in his seat. "Go ahead," he said quietly. "She's all yours."

Anemone was, as usual, running her fingers lightly along the various panels and humming to herself as she waited her turn.

"Always." Anemone slid into the seat and continued lightly touching the dials and screens as she examined them. "So, use of the hyperdrive is reserved for the AP Flying for Jedi class? I'm envious."

Anakin smiled. "I don't want to get us too far from home," he said, "or else we'd be exploring nebulae. The hyperdrive's not all that complicated, really. Insert coordinates, punch button, end up where you want to be. I wouldn't make you plot jump points and trade lanes or anything." He arched up an eyebrow. "I'm demanding, but I don't always ask for the impossible."

Qui-Gon reached for the controls, sure that somewhere Master Dooku was shuddering without knowing why.

Anakin looked a little twitchy himself. "Remember that the Force is all around you," he counseled. "You can use it to move asteroids as easily as steering away from the problem." He smiled. "Or do both at the same time."

"Yes, Master Anakin," Qui-Gon replied automatically, most of his attention on his piloting, reaching out to touch the Force around them. He was a bit tentative at first, but was slowly gaining confidence the longer he went without hitting anything.

"Good," Anakin said, watching carefully. "A little faster now, please. We're Jedi, not nearsighted Hutts."

Rogue wasn't sure if she wanted to try actually flying the shuttle, but she figured Anakin would be a better judge of her abilities than she was.

Anakin quirked up his eyebrow as she approached. "I think you might be a little happier when we get to the part of space that doesn't have the heavy, dangerous projectiles," he said quietly.

Johnny waited for his turn, torn between staring out the windows (at space! the real thing!) and nervously waiting his turn to fly the spacecraft.

Anakin smiled over at him and waved him towards the chair. "Your reflexes are good enough," he decided.

And he'd move anything too huge out of the way himself, but he wasn't going to mention that out loud.

Johnny gave Anakin a weak smile back and took a seat in the pilot's chair. It was just like riding a motorbike, he told himself. A motorbike with a dozen other people on it, hurtling through the endless empty void of space.

He shook his head and refocused his attention on the controls. "So, 's this like the ones from the last couplea weeks?"

"Mostly," Anakin said, giving Johnny a run-through of the controls, paying especially attention to the proximity alert, which would go off if anything got too close.

"And I'm not going anywhere," he concluded. "You won't scratch the paint on the shuttle, let alone cause any larger damage."

Rikku bounced and sat down eagerly behind the controls. "Can I?" she asked. "It's okay if I can't, but ... oh, wow."

Anakin gave her a long appraising look before nodding towards the empty chair.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Rikku squeed and clapped her hands, and then very quickly cleared her throat and tried to look serious. "I mean. I will totally not screw this up and thank you and oh, dude."

She put her hands on the controls a little nervously, and then nodded. "Okay. I won't speed or anything. Honest."
