Detention, The Danger Shop, 09.08.06

When the students walked into the shop, they would see The Tick standing at a podium that probably looked vaguely futuristic back in the mid-1990's: a rounded white plastic frame and clear plexiglass. There were lights and smoke in the background. Behind Tick was a large sign with the following names listed:

When everyone was in the shop, the Tick pushed a button on the Danger Shop remote and spotlights started swinging around.

"Hello, detentioned students! I am The Tick, and I'm not only your Dean of Students, but today I am also your host for Detention Gladiators!" Tick stayed silent as a vaguely patriotic-sounding theme song played for thirty seconds.

"Today you'll be competing in four challenges that will test your mind, body, heart, and ability to think like a crazy person! Hopefully by the end of our time together you'll have learned your lesson - or in Naomi's case set a positive example since she did nothing wrong - and will be ready to move on to the next phase of your lives, without rule breaking!"

"And remember, the Shop is set up with extensive safety protocols! You're completely safe! Explosions won't be real, brutes won't actually hit hard, and the sheer power of the criminal mind won't overwhelm you!"

"SPOOOON!"

[OOC: You do not need to know who any of the hologram NPCs are, but you might enjoy it more if you do. Here's some info on them. This should be crack crack crack and more crack, for the record. Detention will run from approximately 9 AM EST to 5 PM EST, but you're free to go when you've completed all of the tasks. If it takes longer, I'm fine playing longer if you are. :)

"First off, let's meet our participants! Everyone, step forward and tell us your name, your year, why you're here, and then look deep down and tell us what you can do to prevent yourself from being given a detention again! Other students can share their opinions on how you can refrain from getting detention as well! Don't be shy!"

"Now, if you'll step over here, you'll see two circular platforms and two giant cottony swabs! Well, they're actually foam, not cotton, and they're for safe violence, not cleaning! Your goal is to face off against a vile villain and use the giant foam swab to try to knock him off his platform, or at least draw by staying on yours for sixty seconds!"

"Remember, even the bigger opponents are beatable! They're slower, and more capable of toppling over if you sweep their feet well!"

[OOC: Standard rules of combat apply but with a reminder: this is very close combat with a weapon that WILL NOT hurt you. You''ll get hit almost every time, it's just a matter of how well it connected. That is up to the person being attacked. Students always get the first shot here and all of the NPC villains are defeatable.]

"Sport drinks, water, and diner food. The lunch of champions! If there was anyone who wanted to visit you today, now would be the time for that!"

"Perhaps the greatest challenge of mental toughness is the famous Rock-Paper-Scissors! You will be dueling with some of the greatest criminal minds ever! You have three of weaponry symbolically represented with a hand pose!" Tick demonstrated the three weapons. "Scissors cut Paper! Paper wraps Rock! Rock crushes Scissors! What will your opponent choose? You need to figure it out to defeat these ferocious fiends! Best two out of three will give you a victory!"

[OOC: Go ahead and pick whatever you want. For the most part, I'll be using a random number generator. Except for with one NPC. Mwahaha.]

The scene has changed to an obstacle course with an excessive number of walls.

"In that obstacle course, you have ten bombs to find and disarm. You can disarm them easily by removing them from the surface they're stuck to and pushing that button on the front. But be warned! The villain who planted those bombs in the first place will be trying to plant more! You may have to apprehend him somehow! He's no physical threat, but he is really weird, so be wary of him."

[OOC: Mod the placement of the bombs as you will. They'll mostly be right on the wall at eye level. Some will be on the ground, or the ceiling. Any on the ceiling will be above some movable obstacles so you can get up there.

The villain will just run around trying to place more bombs. Stop him however you see fit, either by talking or hitting.]

"You've completed the tasks, no it's time to go, chums! I hope you've learned something today and will be prepared to avoid getting into trouble in the future!"

To show that I'm done. And insane.

Seely stared at the Tick as he spoke. "I'm Seely Booth, I'm a junior, and I'm here because Peter Pevensie has a short fuse and hit me in class. So I hit him back. Obviously, to aviod this happening again, next time he hits me I shouldn't hit back if there's a techer nearby."

"Hey, you look like a student I had last year!" Tick said, easily amused. "He hit people too, but usually for Justice! Usually."

"Remember, Seely, there are security cameras throughout the school and trooper officers around town. You might be best off not hitting anyone since the person who started it would be sure to get into trouble anyway!"

Seely picked up the cotton swab. This couldn't be too hard right?

"I'll remember that." Because it was always a good idea to know when you might get caught.

Seely picked at the diner food. Mmm...diner food.

Seely choose rock. Rock always won.

A very large red man, about the size of The Tick, hopped onto the platform and picked up his jousting stick. "I am The Tick!"

"No you're not, I'm The Tick. You're Barry. We've been over this, Barry!"

"Stupid INSECT, I'll crush you..."

"No you won't, Barry! You're just a hologram!"

Barry hung his head in defeat and looked toward Seely. "FINE! Okay, you little brat, are you ready to be crushed by the might of The T... Barry?" His bravado was largely deflated when he said his name and he hadn't bothered getting into a defensive stance yet.

Seely started scanning the course for bombs. Aha! He reached down to pick the bomb up and disarm it.

A skinny bald man strode out, cape billowing. "I am Mr. Mental! Beware the powers of my mind lest you fall into my control!"

Mr Mental responded to Seely's challenge with paper! Mighty paper! "Ha! I win! Cower before the power of my mind!"

"Mr Mental?" Tick said. "You're a hologram. You don't have your mental powers. Heck, you don't even have a mind, technically speaking!"

And that's how The Tick gave a holographic villain an existential crisis for the next round.

"Great, another costumed looney," Seely muttered as he swung his swab at Barry's knees.

So rock didn't always win. It was worth another shot though.

From around the corner, a hunched-over, crazy-looking man with disproportionally thin legs walked over. "... and so he says to me he says, 'Do you want to go to a school?' and I say, 'NO, BABY, SCHOOL'S FOR FISH WITH NIGHTLIGHTS!' and he says 'There's students to blow up,' and I say 'Then I'm IN BABY! BOOM, BABY, BOOM!' Hahahahahahaha."

He doesn't look like he poses any actual threat, and he clearly hasn't noticed Seely yet.

After adding a second disarmed bomb to the first, Seely started creeping up behind the man, still keeping an eye out for more bombs.

Barry staggered a little, but he used his jousting stick to balance himself. "Oh, that's it, you little punk! You're going to even try to challenge me? I'll show you how it's done!"

Barry pulled the stick back like a baseball bat, but the time it took him to balance, taunt, and wind up left him very exposed.

Preparing to duck Barry's swing, Seely jabbed the swab towards his midsection.

Mr Mental threw down scissors. "Oh, great, you've beaten me with a rock! Does it even matter? I'm not real! I have no powers!"

"Well, it can't hurt to try." Mr Mental's eyes went swirly as he spoke to Seely. "I am going to play scissors again. You want to lose to me. You WILL lose to me. Play paper. You want to play paper."

Seely raised one eyebrow and wondered how this clown got his eyes to do that swirly thing before playing rock again. Good old rock.

Naomi gulped, looking like she'd rather be anywhere but there, "I'm Naomi Wildman, I'm a freshman ... I'm here because my name was called out in the detention lottery on Friday ... if it's a lottery, I doubt I have any power to prevent my name from being called out, so ... that's it I guess,"
