World History in a Nutshell - Week 1 (09/04)

It's entirely possible that Daniel is looking a wee bit jetlagged at the front of the class and is clutching at a cup of coffee like it's a lifeline.

He smiles as the class files in, leaning against his desk. Once they're all seated, he begins.

"Good afternoon and welcome to World History in a Nutshell. I'm Dr. Jackson, and I'll be taking you through this whirlwind tour of the history of Earth. On your desks is a copy of the tentative syllabus

First of all today, I'd like to go around the room and have everyone do a quick introduction so I can put names to faces."

After that was done, Daniel dimmed the lights.

"We're going to start off with an easy class on prehistory today. I have a documentary, which is about human evolution.

Once that's finished, I'm happy to take any questions and then you can take the Caveman Challenge. I'll be interested to see what percentage you'll get at the end."

Sam lounged in the doorway. She had one cup of coffee, from which she was sipping.

Daniel looked up and smiled widely. "Sam! Hey, come on in. How was your summer?"

Sam's expression didn't change. "You didn't got my e-mail?" She entered the room and lounged against Daniel's desk. "How was Egypt?"

"I didn't get any emails, not since the beginning of July," admitted Daniel, sheepishly. "Egypt was good. I only wish I could have stayed for the end of the dig."

"What happened?" Sam asked, immediately assuming Daniel had been in danger. "Are you okay? And no, you can't stay, because Janet would have killed you. Um, we had a very busy summer."

"My harddrive or processor or something didn't like the heat or the sand," said Daniel, shrugging. He nodded over at the laptop on the desk. "I just bought a new one in Alexandria before I came back to the island." He grinned. "No, I know that. Although it would only have been another few weeks. Hopefully Jill will be getting permission to bring some of the artefacts over here and I'll spend a couple of weekends or something in New York when she gets back." Daniel looked at her, slightly alarmed. "Busy good or busy bad?"

"Um, both. There were mummies and Jell-o dragons and the pond turned into coffee," Sam informed him matter-of-factly, "oh, and I'm not going to the academy."

"A coffee pond?" asked Daniel, his eyes wide. He frowned. "You're not? Where are you going instead? MIT? Harvard with Janet?"

Lyra stood in the doorway, waiting for a lull in the class to wave Dr Jackson over.

Daniel looked up as the documentary started, and headed across to the door. "Hello," he said quietly. "Can I help you?"

Um, yeah, I hope so. I didn't sign up for this class because I thought my world and this world were real simmilar. But after talking with some of the others, I know they're not."

Lyra looked at Dr Jackson hopefully. "I was wondering, if the class isn't full, if I could add it to my roster?"

Daniel smiled. "We're not full at all," he said. "Come on in and take a seat. We're watching a documentary about human evolution at the moment, and then we'll be playing a caveman game." He moved across to his class sheet. "What's your name?"

"Thanks you, Dr Jackson," moving into the room. "Oh, uh, I'm Lyra. Lyra Belacqua."

"It's nice to meet you, Lyra," said Daniel, moving to his desk to hand her a copy of the syllabus. "Don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions or anything."

"Not yet, sir, but thank you." Lyra went to go sit down, but turned back after a second. "Oh, I almost forgot. May I have a note for the office? To add the class?"

"Sure thing," said Daniel, grabbing a piece of paper and scribbling a note for her. "Here you go."

Evie was blushing by the time the class was over, and hugging her books to herself. "I am *so* sorry to make you go to this trouble, Dr. Jackson. If you don't have time now, I could stop by later, but, I'm so afraid my next class might need me to use a computer too."

"Not, at all, Evie, don't worry about it," said Daniel firmly as he opened his laptop. "Pull up a chair and I'll do my best to introduce you to the wonderful world of technology."

Evie dragged a chair over, and carefully balanced her books on his desk, then put her chin on both of her hands. "Isabel Evans showed me her laptop? But I'm afraid we didn't have time to do more than look at it, really. I've used a typewriter before, though, really I have."

"That's always a good start," said Daniel, as it started to boot up. "There are also desktop computers, which are the same basic components, but larger and not portable. This is the power button, which, you use to turn it on and off, obviously. Then, there's the keyboard, which is going to be a different layout to the typewriter's you'll have used before. One thing that you'll definitely notice is that there's no key for a pound symbol."

"Well, that's not a very good design," Evie commented, then looked embarassed. "I'm sorry, that was rude. Power button, and desktops, and, and, yes."

Daniel grinned. "Obviously English keyboards do have them," he said. "It's a bit of an ethnocentric design really. Now this," he indicated the screen, "is called an operating system. I'm running Windows, which is a very popular one and you'll probably see it in most computers that you'll be using. It has lots of different programs, such as Word." He double clicked on the icon. "This is your basic program which you'd type in."

"Just a little," Evie managed to not-quite-squeak. "Ahem. Right." She was very glad Isabel had shown her this earlier; it made listening to Dr. Jackson talk about it again a little easier. "So you type, and the words appear, but-- where do they go? I mean to say, how do you put them on paper? You *do* put them on paper, don't you?" She started nibbling on a fingernail with worry.

"You do, yes," said Daniel, smiling. "That requires something called a printer, which prints the text onto paper for you. I don't have one here, although if you ever visit me during my office hours, then I can show you it then. You can also save what you've typed onto your computer's memory, so as long as you don't delete it, it will remain there and you can edit it or print off another copy at any time."
