World History in a Nutshell - Week 1 (09/04)

It's entirely possible that Daniel is looking a wee bit jetlagged at the front of the class and is clutching at a cup of coffee like it's a lifeline.

He smiles as the class files in, leaning against his desk. Once they're all seated, he begins.

"Good afternoon and welcome to World History in a Nutshell. I'm Dr. Jackson, and I'll be taking you through this whirlwind tour of the history of Earth. On your desks is a copy of the tentative syllabus

First of all today, I'd like to go around the room and have everyone do a quick introduction so I can put names to faces."

After that was done, Daniel dimmed the lights.

"We're going to start off with an easy class on prehistory today. I have a documentary, which is about human evolution.

Once that's finished, I'm happy to take any questions and then you can take the Caveman Challenge. I'll be interested to see what percentage you'll get at the end."

Daniel smiled slightly. "That is true," he said. "And as long as you're happy, that's the most important thing."

"You too," Sam said, climbing up on his desk. "Are you okay? It sounded like you and Janet had an argument, from what she said?"

Daniel sighed. "Yeah, we did," he said. "I don't know how it happened."

"Want to talk about it?" She asked, as always falling back into an easy rhythm with Daniel.

"I'm honestly not sure what to say," said Daniel. He glanced up at her. "Do you fight with Jack about his other --" He waved his hand.

"Not so far," Sam shrugged, swinging her foot. "But I knew what I was getting into with Jack--he's not made for monogamy, and I didn't get into it with permanency in mind."

Daniel nodded slowly. "I just -- I don't know if I'm ever going to get used to it, you know?"

"So...what does that mean, for you?" She asked, as always heading right for the neatest solution, even if it was emotionally painful. "Are you willing to give Janet up, if she won't choose between you?"

He shook his head. "No," he said. "That's the thing. Without her -- I can't imagine going through that again. This is the second chance I never thought I'd have and I can't leave her."

"So you're just going to be miserable?"

"Less miserable than I would be without her, " said Daniel quietly. He smiled slightly. "Besides, it won't be forever."

"Oh, Daniel," Sam said, worried for him. "And why not?" It certainly had sounded pretty permanent when Janet had been discussing things.

"I'm going to marry her," he said simply. "We might not be talking formally about it for another few years, but we both know that it's where we're going."

Sam looked down at her hands. "You should really talk to Janet, Daniel."

Daniel nodded. "I know," he said. "I meant to get back here earlier, but I had so many delays and things with flights and everything. Hopefully I'll get the chance to take her out to dinner this week."

Sam wasn't sure Daniel was getting what she was trying to tell him. "Good."

Daniel really was Dr. Oblivious. He smiled at Sam. "I'm pretty sure I still owe you a dinner for something," he said.

"I'm sure you do, too." Sam grinned at him.

Daniel laughed. "Just let me know when you're free, and we'll do it," he said.

"Whatever evening is good for you," Sam decided.

"I have absolutely no idea until I talk to Janet," said Daniel, grinning. "So I'll let you know instead." He paused, smiling at her. "I really missed you this summer."

She reached over to hug him. "I really missed you, too. You missed a lot, and it felt weird not to have you here to talk it over."

Daniel wrapped his arms around her and squeezed slightly. "Well, I'm back again now so I want all the details of what I missed and we can talk it all over now, okay?"

Sam squeezed him tightly. "Okay. I've given up Jell-o for a while. It attacked."
