The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 6)

Harper tapped a control and the virtual workshop expanded in size.

"Now, when you're a mechanical genius like myself," he said without any trace of false modesty. "You'll often be asked to create physics defying contraptions on the fly. Often with parts that are, well, junk. Turning trash into treasure is perhaps your most valuable survival skill. Your job today is to take the parts in this room and create something that might help you survive. No weapons."

John listens to the lecture and wonders when Harper and Tyr's anniversary is. Hey, he's just in that mind set.

When Harper isn't watching them. Cameron tosses John a note;

How's Bruno?

Elizabeth's eyes widened in horror and wondered if she could make sure that she worked next to Sam.

You know, just in case.

John's attention to wakefullness is punctuated by a wee!tiny pocketwatch....with arms and legs....moving around in his shirt pocket and poking him when he falls asleep.

Finally, Aeryn is really unsure about something in one of her classes this summer. She tries not to look it, though.

Molly listened to Harper's lecture and looked worriedly over at all the parts laid out. Oh, this was not her forte at all. This is what Chase was for.

Sam, who was in a really good mood anyway, brightened even further when she found out what the assignment was.

For the longest time, John just sits and thinks.

And then, eureka! He grabs a piece of rope and ties one end to himself and one end to Harper.

"You're smart. I stay close to you, I get out alive."

Okay, that's not his real invention but he wants to see what Harper does.

No weapons? But everything could be used as a weapon.

John sits and nearly falls asleep abotu 3 times thinks, absently playing with his multitool you all have dirty, dirty minds.

Aeryn's got a pesky problem of not having been prepared for things like this. Tinkering is tech work, she's trained to take what she needs rather than build it, and basically she's clueless.

She wonders if she can find a sharp piece of metal and say it's a makeshift weapon. And the sad thing is, she listened to the lecture.

After poking through all of the parts and junk for a while, Molly finally gets an idea and starts collecting bits of wire.

Sam was halfway through the assignment before she remembered she wasn't supposed to be making a weapon. Darn it.

This would take a bit more thought.

Okay, John's thing isn't tying himself to Harper no matter how good an idea that is.

John cuts two holes in two thin pieces of wood and, in between those pieces of wood, he shoves the flat end of a balloon.

"It's a in a pinch voice changer," John explains. He demonstrates by bringing the balloon up to his mouth, blowing up the balloon a bit and sucking all the blown up air back into his mouth.

"See?" His voice is high pitched and squeaky. "In case any authorities come banging on your door and are looking for voice recognition."

Finally having figured what to use as gadget, Cameron moved up carrying a random engine part or something similar. Look, he didn't know what it was himself.

"This is a Diversion Creator. It's pretty much what it sounds like. While the natives have you captured for whatever reason, you whip out this piece of equipment. You invent whatever tail you can about the wonders of the device. Your captors get confused, some might even know it can't do that, but as they start bickering, you have time to sneak away and escape."

Molly came forward with a long necklace that she had made out of insulated wires that had other bits of stiff wire tied in as decorations.

"It's a lock picking device disguised as a necklace," she said. "The stiff wires can be used on regular door locks and the long wires can be used to bypass electronic thingies or short circuit stuff."
