Harper tapped a control and the virtual workshop expanded in size.

"Now, when you're a mechanical genius like myself," he said without any trace of false modesty. "You'll often be asked to create physics defying contraptions on the fly. Often with parts that are, well, junk. Turning trash into treasure is perhaps your most valuable survival skill. Your job today is to take the parts in this room and create something that might help you survive. No weapons."

For the longest time, John just sits and thinks.

And then, eureka! He grabs a piece of rope and ties one end to himself and one end to Harper.

"You're smart. I stay close to you, I get out alive."

Okay, that's not his real invention but he wants to see what Harper does.

"Not lately," John says and tugs the rope a little. "But, c'mon, it's the buddy system!"

John smiles because he thinks that's some kind of compliment. "Seriously, if you, like, fell off a cliff and I was tied to you, I could save you!"

John stumbles towards Harper, frowning the whole way. "So, what does that mean? You guys are in an open relationship?"

Harper let go of the rope.
