Library [08/01]

Rory hurried into the library and turned on the fan immediately before outfitting the desk with both a bottle of water and an iced latte.

With these fortifications, she was ready to spend the day there.

"Of all things," Rory grinned. "Okay, what can I help you find?"

"Massachusetts," Aeryn says, pronouncing it very carefully. "Did I say that right?"

"Yup. That's where I might go to school." Rory looked at her curiously. "What about Massachusetts in particular? Maps? Information about a particular area? Cambridge, maybe?"

"Possibly?" says Aeryn, who actually looks a little shy. "I'm not sure about what area, exactly."

Rory smiled and cleared her throat a little. "Cambridge is the city where John is going to school and I might go, too."

"Then that, yes," she agrees, and for some reason she actually has to still her hands at her sides. "Um. I thought you already knew where you were going to school."

"I'll probably go to Harvard, which is near MIT and stuff, but I have a couple backups and I'm considering one of them kind of seriously," she told her. "So, let's see what we have on the area."

She rolled over to the computer and typed in a few things. "Okay, we have maps of Cambridge and the surrounding areas, and then information on the sites and stuff there."

"That sounds good," Aeryn says. She doubts she'll need maps yet, but it never hurts to get a visual layout of the area. "You've been there, then?"

"Once," Rory said, writing things down. "Mom and I took a road trip and I toured Harvard's campus and sat in on a lecture and stuff. It's really nice there. It's a lot like the area where I grew up, climate-wise."

"The climate's liveable?" Aeryn asks. "Anything like what's going on outside right now, I mean?"

"Probably about this warm, but less muggy?" Rory guessed. "It's a little more temperate in the summer. Cold winters, though."

"I can handle cold," she says. And unnecessarily, but because she hasn't said it yet, she adds, "He wants me to go with him."

"I figured," Rory said. "He told me all about how you'll have dogs and stuff. Vladdie and I are going to visit, even if I end up in New Haven."

"Good," says Aeryn. "I like the idea of having someone else familiar around. How far is New Haven from there?"

"Not very far. It's about an hour from where I grew up, so I could drive it in a few hours," Rory told her. "I'm sure a few others are going to be in the relative area, too."

"Good," Aeryn says again, and admits, "It feels a little like getting reassigned to a different unit where you don't know anything about their assignment or who you'll be working with."

"You know at least one person you'll be with," she reminded her, as though Aeryn was about to forget that part.

"He'll also have his own... thing, though," she says.

"School," Rory said, nodding. "You could go, too. You could probably get into a really good college. Maybe even Harvard or MIT."

"I'm not much for school, even without language barrier," she admits. She's pretty sure the only reason she gets the grades she does is because there's not a lot of reading involved in the classes she takes. "Never mind that I could never afford it. He can do that, I'll... find something to do."

"Student loans," she offered. "Oooh! You could go into military here. Of course then you wouldn't be in Massachusetts."

Rory hadn't given a lot of thought to what someone who didn't grow up on Earth but came from a militaristic background could do. No, really.

"I don't think I could go back into the military," Aeryn says, and the suggestion doesn't bother her coming from Rory. Weird. "Plus, I doubt that the fact that I'm an alien would have me more likely to be studied rather than utilized. I've thought about it."

"You could be a pilot," she suggested. "Non-military. Commercial."

"You mean with passengers?" She considers this. There were Peacekeepers that had to fly the transports, of course, but then they often got to stay behind while Aeryn and her unit got to do the fun stuff.
