Library [08/01]

Rory hurried into the library and turned on the fan immediately before outfitting the desk with both a bottle of water and an iced latte.

With these fortifications, she was ready to spend the day there.

"I'm hoping," she says, shaking her head. "Um. Anyway, so, books?"

"Books!" Rory said, holding up the paper. "Maps are over there, and reference books are that way," she said, pointing. "Need help finding stuff, or want to venture into the stacks alone?"

Aeryn thinks about this, and decides, "You can start me off, how about that?"

Because the stacks are confusing and kind of scary.

Rory nodded, and led the way over to where she'd pointed for the maps. "Okay, Massachusetts is here," she said, pulling down a small atlas.

"Okay," she says, taking it to look through it. "It's very small."

"Most of New England is made of tiny states. You should see where I'm from," Rory replied.

"Where's that?" she asks, realizing that she doesn't actually know.

"Connecticut," Rory said, pulling down another atlas. "Okay, this is the entire US. New England is really just best explained as being most of the long stemmy arm-like part of the US," she said, flipping the page. "There's Massachusetts, and there's Connecticut, and down here is Virginia, where we are."

Aeryn studies it, trying to memorize positions of things. When she's pretty sure she's got it, she asks, "Where's North Carolina?"

Rory looked for a moment, and then found it. "There. And then below it is South Carolina."

Aeryn's never really studied the geography here, so actually being able to see where things are in relation to one another is pretty exciting for her. Especially when she knows the names of places. "What about Florida?" she asks. "Or Maine."

"Florida's here at the bottom, the sticky-out one, and then Maine's all the way here at the top," Rory supplied immediately.

"Okay," Aeryn says, smiling a little as she's finally able to put it all together. "Got that. What next?"

Rory gathered up both atlases and led the way over to the other books. "Okay, we have Massachusetts Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities, & Other Offbeat Stuff, and Massachusetts Off the Beaten Path: A Guide to Unique Places," she supplied, pulling both of them off the shelf. "It's a very interesting place."

"Okay," she says, tilting her head to look at the pictures on the covers. "I think that's enough for now. It might take me a little while to get through them."

"You get to keep them for a couple weeks," Rory said, nodding. "And you can renew them if you have to."

"All right," she nods, holding her hands out for the books. "Thank you for this."
