Rory hurried into the library and turned on the fan immediately before outfitting the desk with both a bottle of water and an iced latte.

With these fortifications, she was ready to spend the day there.

"Probably about this warm, but less muggy?" Rory guessed. "It's a little more temperate in the summer. Cold winters, though."

"I can handle cold," she says. And unnecessarily, but because she hasn't said it yet, she adds, "He wants me to go with him."

"I figured," Rory said. "He told me all about how you'll have dogs and stuff. Vladdie and I are going to visit, even if I end up in New Haven."

"Good," says Aeryn. "I like the idea of having someone else familiar around. How far is New Haven from there?"

"Not very far. It's about an hour from where I grew up, so I could drive it in a few hours," Rory told her. "I'm sure a few others are going to be in the relative area, too."

"Good," Aeryn says again, and admits, "It feels a little like getting reassigned to a different unit where you don't know anything about their assignment or who you'll be working with."

"You know at least one person you'll be with," she reminded her, as though Aeryn was about to forget that part.

"He'll also have his own... thing, though," she says.

"School," Rory said, nodding. "You could go, too. You could probably get into a really good college. Maybe even Harvard or MIT."

"I'm not much for school, even without language barrier," she admits. She's pretty sure the only reason she gets the grades she does is because there's not a lot of reading involved in the classes she takes. "Never mind that I could never afford it. He can do that, I'll... find something to do."

"Student loans," she offered. "Oooh! You could go into military here. Of course then you wouldn't be in Massachusetts."

Rory hadn't given a lot of thought to what someone who didn't grow up on Earth but came from a militaristic background could do. No, really.

"I don't think I could go back into the military," Aeryn says, and the suggestion doesn't bother her coming from Rory. Weird. "Plus, I doubt that the fact that I'm an alien would have me more likely to be studied rather than utilized. I've thought about it."

"You could be a pilot," she suggested. "Non-military. Commercial."

"You mean with passengers?" She considers this. There were Peacekeepers that had to fly the transports, of course, but then they often got to stay behind while Aeryn and her unit got to do the fun stuff.

Rory nodded. "I would totally take one of your flights."

Aeryn smiles. "I appreciate it. I have time to think about it, too. I just." She takes a deep breath. "Really need to start."

"Oh! Also? They have people who take helicopters for scenic tours. You could fly those!" Rory said. "Anakin should have had us fly helicopters in class."

She tilted her head. "Do you really have to start now, though? You've got a year, at least."

"It will take me that long before I realize what exactly it is I'm doing," she explains.

"You could take time off. Not really do anything." Rory kind of knew that was a very silly suggestion.

"Somehow I don't see that happening," Aeryn says, because it is a very silly suggestion.

"You could just spend time with the doggies!" Rory said. "It's just cohabitation, right? Not...anything else, yet?" Her eyes drifted to Aeryn's left hand.

Aeryn reflexively clenches her hand a little. "No," she says. And after a long pause, "But that would probably be next."

Rory nodded. "Good to know," she said casually. "But you don't want to spend the time John's in school doing something that'll bore you, do you?"

"Taking time off would bore me," she answers.

"But working retail or something wouldn't?" she asked.
