Careers Fair, Fandom High Front Lawn, Friday Afternoon, 07/21/06

By lunch time, the booths were set up, the guests had arrived and there was quaint music playing from somewhere undetermined. Hawkeye is walking around with one of those portable microphone/speaker set-ups, roaming from booth to booth announcing the various guests that have come to Fandom to talk about their professions.

And despite what the mainland weather forecast said, it was definitely a nice, fine day.

"Hi there boys and girls! As you've been told, I'm Medical Officer Frank DuFrense. Most people call me 'Doc', which is actually incorrect. I'm not a Doctor, I'm a Medic. There's a big difference." the guy in the purple metal suit explained. "Doctors cure people. Medics just make them comfortable until they die they can get to a Doctor."

"Good morning pupilrinos! Like your wonderful vice principal just said, I am Ned Flanders, owner and operator of the Leftorium. What is the Leftorium, you may be asking yourself? Well, I like to to say it's the store that will make you bereft not to be left!"

Ned waits for laughter that probably never comes.

"I've brought some samples of the Leftorium's merchanse. Left handed scissors, left handed shot glasses, and left handed...CONDOMS?!"

Ned shrieks like a girl and immediately throws the condoms into the crowd.

Laughing nervously, he says, "No idea how those got in there. Must've been a err-diddily-or with my inventory."

Possibly waiting to see if the condoms make a reapparance, Ned finally continues: "Being a self starter wasn't easy kids. It took dedication, intelligence, and many, many sleepless nights reading the Lord's word. That's the way to go, let me tell you! So, questions?"

Dana decides they don't look so scary. She could take 'em.

"Hey there," Dana greets them with a smile. "How many of you actually watch Sports Night? Okay, I don't actually care because you're not in our demographic. Though, boys, you might want to start tuning your remotes to our channel as that eighteenth birthday approaches. Just a tip. If you do watch, though, you will see one of the most well-put together shows on television right now- and let's face it, this includes most network shows on the air today. A lot of the credit goes to a wonderful anchor team, but there's a lot you don't see, which is what goes on behind the scenes, where my team and myself run ourselves ragged every day trying to get the show written and cut and put together in time to go live on the air. It's exhausting and thrilling and I love every single second of it. So, any questions?"

"Good morning everyone. I'm Ron Burgundy, news anchor for Channel Four News in San Diego."

Ron runs a hand through his delicious hair and gives a wink to any ladies out there. "I guess being a news anchor is like being a Moses. Bringing the word of the world to the people. Is that Moses? Or is it Noah? Perhaps it's Jesus...no, wait. I'm no Jesus. Even if he did have great hair."

Ron began to laugh to himself, loudly. He was even laughing when he went to take a gulp of his coffee. "Knights of Columbus that coffee is hot!"

Aeryn arrives, looking maybe a little intimidated and hoping she doesn't have to pick a career or anything today. They didn't exactly have these where she's from. She doesn't know. Yeah, the good mood's gone and she's definitely back to normal now.

Re: SPY

"Good afternoon to you all," Alianne said with a charming smile. "I'm Alianne though my mother doesn't even call me that. You may feel free to call me Aly. I grew up in a spy's household but I only started truly practicing the craft when I was sixteen. I was kidnapped and sold as a slave from my home. Which was a lesson to me. No matter how good you think you are? A group of lugs can capture you if you're not paying attention." She shrugged and raised her eyes to the sky. "So always pay attention."

"I was sold, well, given away really, as a slave to a Duke's family, but prophecies, gods, and inept rulers took their course - as they do - and now I'm the spymaster to Queen Dovasary of the Copper Isles." She grinned. "And no, I'd not be batting that around if I'd not been assured I'm the only one here from my time. Since Dove was crowned, my job's been to prevent foreign countries - friends and foes - from taking advantage while keeping an eye on those nobles less than estatic about the new regime." She fingered the shiny black beaded necklace she wore. "Anyone ever tell you that the clean-up is harder than the fight? Believe them. So I'm here to answer any questions you have about spying, intelligence gathering, codes, gathering support, formenting rebellion." She laughed mischieviously. "And yes, I have some tools to give away. Any questions?"

"Good afternoon, students," Cruger says solemnly in greeting.

"Space Patrol Delta was founded by my people in order to deal with criminals who pose a threat to entire planets, or even the galaxy as a whole." Cruger explains. "There is a wide range of career options available at SPD- Officers, who are charged with enforcing galactic laws and bringing in those who would break those laws. Power Rangers, who are SPD Officers who also act as a planet's first line of defense when under attack by hostile forces. And of course, where would we be without the technology that allows us to stay one step ahead of the criminal element? Our Research and Development department is one of the finest this side of the M-51 Galaxy. If you have an interest in keeping your galaxy safe, SPD has a place for you."

After his introductory spiel, the commander sits back down, ready to answer any questions.

Barring the occassional jaunt off to other booths to go see what they're all about, Bridge is also here, in full dress uniform (http://pics.livejournal.com/bridge_carson/pic/0003zy90/g5), in case anyone wants to talk to *him* and get a Cadet's perspective about SPD.

Mark set up a camera on a tripod -- just to catch anything that might happen while he was talking -- and adjusted his glasses before starting to talk.

"Hi. I'm Mark. I make documentaries, mostly.

The most important thing you need is a filmmaker is passion. Second most important, is a point of view." He paused, as if weighing what he had said.

"You need a camera, too. And some film. And, unfortunately, money, so you can do anything with the film. Though the Bohemian thing? That's about making do, figuring it out instead of selling out. And passion and a point of view will get you far. Pick your subject and get out there and let your camera capture it. Film your friends. Film your family. Film the people who are both."

He swallowed. "Any questions?"
