Careers Fair, Fandom High Front Lawn, Friday Afternoon, 07/21/06

By lunch time, the booths were set up, the guests had arrived and there was quaint music playing from somewhere undetermined. Hawkeye is walking around with one of those portable microphone/speaker set-ups, roaming from booth to booth announcing the various guests that have come to Fandom to talk about their professions.

And despite what the mainland weather forecast said, it was definitely a nice, fine day.

"He looks a lot like our own Sheriff, only purple and not as intimidating. Come and meet Medical Officer Frank "Doc" DuFrense. He's here to answer all of your questions about being a medic or being a conscientious objector in the military."

"Hi there boys and girls! As you've been told, I'm Medical Officer Frank DuFrense. Most people call me 'Doc', which is actually incorrect. I'm not a Doctor, I'm a Medic. There's a big difference." the guy in the purple metal suit explained. "Doctors cure people. Medics just make them comfortable until ~~they die~~ they can get to a Doctor."

"Why did you get into the military if you are a conscientious objector?"

"Well, I'm a pacifist so that's the 'objector' part. I don't agree with violence as a way of settling disputes, but war happens and people get hurt. And I wouldn't want people to suffer if I can help them. I may not agree with war, or that the powers that be have chosen it as a course of action. But the suffering should be comforted and the innocent protected. Also, I thought it would be easier to effect change from the inside. That's the 'conscientious' part."

That guy looked like Tex! Only shorter and purple. Maybe this could be useful if they were from the same place, or at least a similar place. "Hey. Where are you from?"

"Originally or most recently?"

"Uhhh both?"

"Well," Doc said ~~as the mun pulled out the list of stuff she made up~~. "I'm originally from Orange County, California. But most recently I was engaged in training exercises at the Waterworks."

"I don't suppose you know a place called Blood Gulch, do you? Wouldn't happen to know where it is in relation to Earth? Oh, by the way, military medic. Two thumbs up. You guys do good work."

"Oh well thank you very much young man! It's always nice to know your work is appreciated. Blood Gulch you say? Hmmmm..."

Doc put both hands up to his helmet, there was a click and the hiss of an airtight seal being broken. He took off the helmet and tucked it under his arm, scratching his head thoughtfully.

"Sounds familiar actually."

"Yeah? Know where it is? Near Mars? Chulak? Abydos?"

"Actually, I think the next closest planet is Coral. Which is roughly... That way." he said pointing directly up in the sky.

"I could be wrong though. I'm a medic, not a navigator!"

Kawalsky was disappointed, but nodded. "Thanks anyway. Hey, can I try your helmet on?"

"Yeah, no problem. Do you have a friend or relative stationed at Blood Gulch?" Doc asked before considering Kawalsky's request to try the helmet on.

"Well I probably shouldn't let you try it on, we're not supposed to take our helmets off during official functions and recruitment drives. But it's not often I'm so close to that good old sea air."

Doc sucked in a deep breath through his nose and let it out though his mouth.

"Ahhhhhh... You know what? I hate having to disappoint somebody twice in one day. So yeah you can try the helmet on. But be careful not to touch it here or here while you're putting it on. Otherwise, I'd have to treat you." he chuckled as he stood up to hand him the helmet, reveling himself to be taller then he looked when sitting down.

"A friend? You could say that. Our relationship is a complicated one." He took the helmet, grinning. "Thanks." Kawalsky put on the helmet carefully and looked around. "Wow. Cool. So that's what it looks like."

There's also a heads up display but I don't think you have the required holes in youe head for the link up!" Doc looked around. "We should find somebody with a camera."

"Yeah!" Kawalsky moved around, trying to get a feel for the helmet. "Hey!" He called to a ~~handwavey NPC~~ person with a camera who was taking photos for the school archives. "Can you take a photo?" The person nodded and Kawalsky stood beside Doc. "C'mon!"

Doc crouched down to be level with Kawalsky. Putting one arm around his shoulders and giving a thumbs up with the other.

"CHEESE!"

Kawalsky grinned as the photo was taken, even though it couldn't be seen behind the helmet. "Thanks, Doc." He pulled the helmet off carefully and handed it back. "Man those things are heavy."

"Yeah, I guess it is." Doc said taking the helmet back with one hand. "I don't notice so much when it's on my head."

He nodded. "Good luck with being a medic and all that. I'd better get on and see the rest of the fair. Hey, if you're ever in Blood Gulch and you run into a blue guy named Church, tell him he owes me one."

"I think that's my next stop after this, so I'll be able to do that soon... ish." Doc nodded putting his helmet back on.

Of course he'd completely forgotten to get the kids name.

"Great. Thanks Doc. See ya around."

That was unlikely (at least for this year), but it was the thought that counts.

"Not if I see you first." Doc said, overly amused at his own joke.
