Careers Fair, Fandom High Front Lawn, Friday Afternoon, 07/21/06

By lunch time, the booths were set up, the guests had arrived and there was quaint music playing from somewhere undetermined. Hawkeye is walking around with one of those portable microphone/speaker set-ups, roaming from booth to booth announcing the various guests that have come to Fandom to talk about their professions.

And despite what the mainland weather forecast said, it was definitely a nice, fine day.

"Good afternoon, students," Cruger says solemnly in greeting.

"Space Patrol Delta was founded by my people in order to deal with criminals who pose a threat to entire planets, or even the galaxy as a whole." Cruger explains. "There is a wide range of career options available at SPD- Officers, who are charged with enforcing galactic laws and bringing in those who would break those laws. Power Rangers, who are SPD Officers who also act as a planet's first line of defense when under attack by hostile forces. And of course, where would we be without the technology that allows us to stay one step ahead of the criminal element? Our Research and Development department is one of the finest this side of the M-51 Galaxy. If you have an interest in keeping your galaxy safe, SPD has a place for you."

After his introductory spiel, the commander sits back down, ready to answer any questions.

Jamie raises his hand. "Excuse me Mr. Doggie? How does your team seem to hang in the air seeming to defy gravity while doing wire-fu martial arts?"

"My name is Commander Cruger," Cruger informs Jamie. "And as for the gravity-defying, it's one of the many special properties of the fabric used to create the Ranger uniforms."

"What's your policy on mutants with special powers," Jamie asked curiously.

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I do not share the prejudices against them that many seem to, if that's what you're asking," Cruger says. "In fact, I strongly believe that people with such abilities can be an asset in the fight against evil."

"Do you recruit people from outside your timeline?" Jamie asked. "And what do you look for in a recruit?"

"If they possess the right qualities, it's something that we at SPD would consider," Cruger tells Jamie. "And as for what those qualities are? A strong sense of responsibility, as well as dedication towards the ideal of making the galaxy a safer place for everyone."

Hamlet raised his hand. "Are these uniforms flame retardant as well? From what I have heard, it seems as though the SPD teams often encounter situations with a great deal of explosions, and I would hate to think that the officers were constantly in jeopardy."

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"They are," Cruger nods solemnly. "The fabric is highly resistant to impacts of concussive force, as well."

[identity profile] ihatedenmark.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is it difficult to fight so many battles? Criminals will forever be around, but are officers give opportunities to rest while not enforcing laws?"

Pip raised a hand. "Excuse me, sir? How's the pay in the SPD?"

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think, perhaps, if you are looking at it for money, then SPD may not be the place for you, young man." Cruger says, not unkindly.

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, my family has been doing it for money for like... oh, God knows how many generations now. I'm just curious to see if there's some sort of comparable pay scale, since my grandfather always told me that there was no money in working officially. I wanted to see if he was right or not."

"SPD Officers and Rangers earn more than enough to live comfortably, though monetary gain is not our primary concern."

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then what is your primary concern?"
absolutesnark: (Intrigued)

Piper raised her hand. "So SPD's in the evil fighting business, right? That's sort of something I'm gonna be doing with my life. Has SPD ever hired witches with magical powers before?"

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Though SPD has never had a witch among its ranks, there have been witches in non-SPD Ranger teams throughout history. We would definitely consider an applicant with magical abilities to be an asset to SPD." Cruger smiles at her.
absolutesnark: (Curious)

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

"What sort of training does it involve?" Piper asked. She was definitely intrigued.

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"For starters... Criminal law, of course, as well as hand-to-hand combat and how to handle energy weapons."
absolutesnark: (Oh really?)

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[personal profile] absolutesnark 2006-07-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmmm, I'm not especially good at hand-to-hand combat. I think that's why I was blessed with an offensive power," Piper said, blinking.

"What kind of energy weapons?" she continued.

"And what happens to people who break the law?" Briar tried for innocent.

"SPD utilises capture cards (http://pics.livejournal.com/bridge_carson/pic/0000rgzc/g2) to detain criminals," Cruger says, sliding an empty card across the booth to Briar.

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] greenmagebriar.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's unusual." Briar studied the card but didn't touch it. "How does it work?"

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] spdemergency.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"A Judgement scanner reads a suspect's vital signs after they've been formally charged with a crime. If their physiological response indicates guilt, they're transported to a small pocket dimension housed inside the card."

Re: LAW ENFORCEMENT

[identity profile] greenmagebriar.livejournal.com 2006-07-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hunh. And if the person is able to keep their physiological responses under control or is just naturally nervous?"
