Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

So, it wasn't Fall yet by a long shot. The temperatures were still high, the leaves were still green, and the calendar still said August. But the calendar of consumerism didn't care about reality and thus, the welcome picnic was decorated for fall. The tables were covered in reds, oranges, and yellows, there was apple cider in the punch bowls and, of course, if the food on the table could come in pumpkin spice form, it was here in pumpkin spice form.

Okay, so this 'faculty mentor' would be the person who finally realized, 'Whoa, a necromancer in our midst, someone has made a horrible mistake,' right?

Ghanima had dressed practically today, ditching the Imperial gowns and hats for a Fremen tunic and pants. She had Trebor on her hip, and a piece of paper in her free hand.

"Erasmus Boone!" she read out cheerfully, stuffing the paper into a pocket. "We are looking for an Erasmus Boone!"

"That's me!" Erasmus exclaimed. "Hi." He gave an awkward little wave.

"I am Ghanima Atreides, your faculty mentor," Ghanima said warmly, offering him a handshake.

"And this fine fellow," she bounced the child on her hip, "--is my son and co-teacher, Trebor."

Trebor giggled out a 'hi,' and Ghanima gave him a fond smile before turning her attention back to Erasmus. "We welcome you to Fandom University, Mr. Boone."

The baby was her co-teacher. Right. Well, maybe he was! Erasmus apparently knew nothing.

"Thank you," Erasmus said. "I'm glad to be--oh, uh, are you sure?" he asked when he noticed her outstretched hand.

"Do you have a power where you kill upon skin contact? Or automatically causes you to read minds? I know we've had students with both conditions," Ghanima asked curiously. "If so, don't fret, we can head into town quickly to get you some gloves, so that you can participate in the picnic without concern."

"I know some students arrive here with little notice and no personal belongings, and we can remedy the situation if that is the case."

"Uh, no," Erasmus told her. "I mean, no, neither of those, wow, and I did know I was coming here. I'm just a necromancer...?"

Ah, this one was going to need a little extra reassurance.

"Have I made a cultural faux-pas and offended you by suggesting you touch living flesh?" Ghanima checked, "If so, I apologize."

"But you should know that I am most likely not from your universe, as mine lacks both magical and scientific necromancy, unless you count cloning."

"In fact, the odds of you finding someone else from your world here is low, unless you are familiar with Jedi," she continued with a faint smile. "Fandom Island is a reality nexus, Mr. Boone. Whether by chance or destiny, we have all found our way here to a place suspended in the in-betweens and everywhere at once."

"It's an interesting sort of freedom, and an excellent educational opportunity."

Yeah, a nice town that somehow got Riri enrolled before she even knew about the place. That was fine. It was fine. Maybe she could get a grant here and be able to continue working on the armor without having to go home...

Jaina had kind of thought she'd be stopping in to get her kids and then moving back today. The second half of that was not happening, and she'd been surprised she'd gotten a class on the schedule, let alone a mentee?

Eh, she was good at the mentor thing.

"Is anyone Riri?" she called when she saw the list.

"Uh, present?" Riri said like she wasn't sure where this was going, but hopefully it wasn't an immediately expulsion because of, you know, all the minor bits of academic dishonesty in selling projects before.

Don had spent most of the break week in reality (and in surgery), so he'd thought it only fair for Thor to go to the picnic, since he was teaching this term and all. Then he'd gotten notification of his new 'mentee' and plans had changed.

So here he was, clutching a giant coffee from the gremlin Starbucks like it was his lifeline and looking around for anyone who might be a Wilhelmina or a Billie.

Billie was looking around for him, too! And being Billie, this involved reading the name, then turning around and yelling “Is there a Donald Blake here?” to the general crowd.

No one had ever accused her of being shy.

"That's 'Doctor,' Don said on reflex, and then winced as Thor chuckled at him. "Shut up," he muttered. Louder, he clarified, "Don Blake, over here!" Leaving the 'doctor' off this time, thank you very much.

Don...was going to need another sip of his coffee to deal with that much enthusiasm. Okay, he was fortified. "Good morning!" he greeted Billie. "First things first, did you know you were coming here this morning?"

“I sure did!” Billie said. “And I have read up on multiple universe theory in preparation for the shenanigans that must surely ensue from living in a nexus of worlds.”

She did not know about Anakin’s shenanigans. She just liked the word.

"Oh, no," Don told her. "Shenanigans won't be on again until next summer." A beat. "Well, formal shenanigans. The informal kind happen all the time." Thanks, Don, that totally made sense.

It was a joke. Not that that was easy to tell with this one.
