Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

So, it wasn't Fall yet by a long shot. The temperatures were still high, the leaves were still green, and the calendar still said August. But the calendar of consumerism didn't care about reality and thus, the welcome picnic was decorated for fall. The tables were covered in reds, oranges, and yellows, there was apple cider in the punch bowls and, of course, if the food on the table could come in pumpkin spice form, it was here in pumpkin spice form.

"...of course there's that in Maryland," Riri said, pretending this was normal. "Woulda guessed New York, honestly."

"No, it's much quieter than New York," she said. "Until it's not."

"That's ominous. You know that's ominous, right?"

"It's because it's ominous." Jaina. "Sometimes things attack."

"...can they not?" Riri Williams, asking the real questions here.

"Most of the time, yes," Jaina said. "It's pretty seasonal."

"Man, I stayed away from New York for a reason," Riri muttered. "Does the school have, like, an evacuation plan or something?"

"No, people just usually walk out to fight," she said. "Though we did have a kraken drill recently."

"And this school hasn't been shut down?" Riri asked.

"Would you go and try to shut down a place that gets practice fighting monsters and things a few times a year?" Jaina pointed out.

"Me or the US government?"

Big difference.

"I'd still bet on Fandom against the US government."

Said someone who was the actual government somewhere.

"I think I'll sit that one out," Riri said, with the strong implication it did not end well the one time she got on their radar.
