Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

It was unseasonably warm in Fandom today, which was good news for anyone who didn't want to have to worry about bundling up, and bad news for anyone hoping for a snowy picnic. Traditions were traditions though, so there was still a bonfire going and plenty of supplies for s'mores and hot chocolate among the variety of foods and drinks that had been prepared for the new folks.

Once everything was set up and un-tasteful amounts of glitter had been brushed off of everything, it was time to be welcoming!

"You do not have to inhale it, new girl," a voice said from next to her, as Illyana was making herself an obscenely large sandwich that was an abomination to all good taste. "You can put some in your pockets for later if you want, no one will care."

"But there is more food at the dorms, and a cafeteria at the school. Dorm food usually has someone's name on it, but if not, it's fair game. If someone complains you took their food but there was no name, ignore them. They know better." Or at least they should, given how much of an unclaimed food-swiper Illyana tended to be. "The cafeteria food is free."

You said that like Vi's pockets weren't full already, Illyana.

But she sounded enough like a normal person that Vi actually bothered swallowing before replying. "But what if the labelled food looks tastier?"

"Move it to the back of the fridge for a day and see if anyone notices. If not, take it, eat it, but throw out the evidence in another floor's common room." ILLYANA. NO.

"But really, know your target. If it's Nell's, she'll probably make you some if you ask. If it's Five, he will find a way to shank you when he finds out." Illyana shrugged. "He's twitchy."

Vi shrugged and licked her fingers, now that she was eating slowly enough to taste it, this food was pretty good. "Wouldn't be the first who tried. Pretty sure I could take him."

You did remember that whole trying not to obviously be an escaped con thing, right Vi?

It wasn't obvious to Illyana, but then again, she'd been raised in a Hell dimension where they cut each other for fun. Her sense of 'appropriate teenage pastimes' was skewed.

"He's a teleporter, so good luck with that," she said dryly. "We're hard to catch."

"It'd be like catching a firelight, you just gotta be patient."

The narrative was going to remember you said that in a few years when Sevika was using your face to scrub an alley wall, Vi.

"Ah yes, patience is how you catch the people who make physics their bitch. I will remember that," Yana said dryly. "I think I will tell Five that, just to watch his twitchy little head explode."

She squinted at Vi. "Your name isn't Six, is it?" she asked, pointing at her facial tattoo. "If you're another one of the numbered siblings, I am going to start a Bingo card to collect you all."

"Hey, getting 'em mad enough to make a mistake also works." And Vi was very good at making them mad ~~when she didn't lose her own temper~~, she couldn't figure out why when she had such a way with people.

She shook her head. "No, it's Vi."

"Illyana." She replied in exchange, and grabbed the jar of spicy mustard and began pouring it all over her sandwich. "If you decide to try the hot chocolate, be careful. It is actually hot, and you might burn your taste buds if you try to chug it."

There was zero judgement in her tone; Illyana had also been a feral, semi-starved runaway at her first picnic. She recognized THOSE signs.

Vi had been avoiding that because it'd smelled rich enough to make her puke even if she'd been eating normally, but she nodded anyway. "Thanks for the heads up. What's the deal with this place anyway?"

"Boarding school for the weird, the delinquent, the time-tossed, the traumatized, the maladjusted, or the just plain 'I don't have anywhere else to go' types," Illyana said bluntly, though that question did merit an eyebrow raise. "Though don't worry, it's not some reform or charm school."

"Did your school-assigned 'Big Sibling' not give you the 'Welcome to the Madhouse, try not to die' speech?"

"I did notice the lack of enforcers." Hence why she was down here instead of hiding up on a roof. "He said something about a moose, but I like to get second opinions."

Especially when places like this didn't do things for people like her for no reason.

"There is technically a police department on the island, if that's what you mean by enforcers, but they seem to mostly deal with the townies as far as I can tell. No one's ever showed-up to arrest me for any crimes I may or may not have committed at home."

She totally had. There were plenty of beatings and a few deaths that Illyana called self-defense, but various police departments might call murder.

Illyana put her sandwich fixings down and gave Vi her full attention. "I've already had to do this once today, so you are getting the abbreviated version. Welcome to Fandom High. This is a multidimensional nexus. You are on the planet Earth, the year 2022. This place connects with many realities via portals. Magic, aliens, demons, undead, special powers, all that is real. If you are here unexpectedly, the school will probably help you sort some shit out. If they don't, come find me. Yes, there is a moose, it runs the administration office for the school and I do not trust it. A moose is unpredictable in the best circumstances."

That wasn't a relief, exactly, but Vi's shoulders lost a little of their tension.

"So if I wanted to go home, I'd need to find one of these portals?" A full belly and clean clothes were great, but they were less important than figuring out how to find Powder.

Illyana nodded. "There is a business, Portalocity. It is run by gnomes, and they control the multiverse-portals, as much as they can be controlled. The island verges on being sentient, and sometimes it is contrary about where it will connect to."

"If it's just a portal around the island, or back to my world..." a small, yellow disc blinked into existence right next to her, and Illyana stuck her arm into it to grab a soda from the other end of the table, where her arm popped out of an identical portal. Soda achieved, she pulled her arm back out again and both portals vanished. "That, I can help with."

"Guess I'll have to check out this Portalocity, then." Spoiler, the island was not going to connect to Piltover, or anywhere else on Runeterra either.

"Neat trick, bet it's handy in sorts of situations." Some of them might even be legal.

"I do not have to go outside to go to classes on the days where it rains candy, or the snow is really made of frozen soft-drinks, which is good. I dislike weird weather," Illyana said, making a face. "I do take bribes to give people rides during those types of days."

"But the days where it rains your 'emotional baggage' are the worst. Those days, I will yeet everyone's physical baggage into portals for free. It is entertainment, to make up for terrible things the island says to upset us."

Vi was going to need so much baggage yote. So much.

"See, I knew there was a catch with this place."

"Oh there is absolutely a catch. You are stuck in a dorm with dozens of unstable teenagers, many of us with unstable powers, sometimes there is homework, and then there's island-wide emergencies where various unspeakable evils try to kill us all or take over the world or whatever two-to-four times a year."

Illyana popped the top to her soda and shrugged before taking a drink. "Beats the last school I went to. They tried to make me into a hero."

Gross.

"Man, topsider schools are fucking weird."
