Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

It was unseasonably warm in Fandom today, which was good news for anyone who didn't want to have to worry about bundling up, and bad news for anyone hoping for a snowy picnic. Traditions were traditions though, so there was still a bonfire going and plenty of supplies for s'mores and hot chocolate among the variety of foods and drinks that had been prepared for the new folks.

Once everything was set up and un-tasteful amounts of glitter had been brushed off of everything, it was time to be welcoming!

By this point, Vi was certain that something seriously wrong was going on here, but she was also starving and there was no point in waiting for the other shoe to drop on an empty stomach, not when there was a free meal involved. So, she set up next to one of the tables and started stuffing her face.

"You do not have to inhale it, new girl," a voice said from next to her, as Illyana was making herself an obscenely large sandwich that was an abomination to all good taste. "You can put some in your pockets for later if you want, no one will care."

"But there is more food at the dorms, and a cafeteria at the school. Dorm food usually has someone's name on it, but if not, it's fair game. If someone complains you took their food but there was no name, ignore them. They know better." Or at least they should, given how much of an unclaimed food-swiper Illyana tended to be. "The cafeteria food is free."

You said that like Vi's pockets weren't full already, Illyana.

But she sounded enough like a normal person that Vi actually bothered swallowing before replying. "But what if the labelled food looks tastier?"

"Move it to the back of the fridge for a day and see if anyone notices. If not, take it, eat it, but throw out the evidence in another floor's common room." ILLYANA. NO.

"But really, know your target. If it's Nell's, she'll probably make you some if you ask. If it's Five, he will find a way to shank you when he finds out." Illyana shrugged. "He's twitchy."

Vi shrugged and licked her fingers, now that she was eating slowly enough to taste it, this food was pretty good. "Wouldn't be the first who tried. Pretty sure I could take him."

You did remember that whole trying not to obviously be an escaped con thing, right Vi?

It wasn't obvious to Illyana, but then again, she'd been raised in a Hell dimension where they cut each other for fun. Her sense of 'appropriate teenage pastimes' was skewed.

"He's a teleporter, so good luck with that," she said dryly. "We're hard to catch."

"It'd be like catching a firelight, you just gotta be patient."

The narrative was going to remember you said that in a few years when Sevika was using your face to scrub an alley wall, Vi.

"Ah yes, patience is how you catch the people who make physics their bitch. I will remember that," Yana said dryly. "I think I will tell Five that, just to watch his twitchy little head explode."

She squinted at Vi. "Your name isn't Six, is it?" she asked, pointing at her facial tattoo. "If you're another one of the numbered siblings, I am going to start a Bingo card to collect you all."

"Hey, getting 'em mad enough to make a mistake also works." And Vi was very good at making them mad ~~when she didn't lose her own temper~~, she couldn't figure out why when she had such a way with people.

She shook her head. "No, it's Vi."

"Illyana." She replied in exchange, and grabbed the jar of spicy mustard and began pouring it all over her sandwich. "If you decide to try the hot chocolate, be careful. It is actually hot, and you might burn your taste buds if you try to chug it."

There was zero judgement in her tone; Illyana had also been a feral, semi-starved runaway at her first picnic. She recognized THOSE signs.

Vi had been avoiding that because it'd smelled rich enough to make her puke even if she'd been eating normally, but she nodded anyway. "Thanks for the heads up. What's the deal with this place anyway?"

"Boarding school for the weird, the delinquent, the time-tossed, the traumatized, the maladjusted, or the just plain 'I don't have anywhere else to go' types," Illyana said bluntly, though that question did merit an eyebrow raise. "Though don't worry, it's not some reform or charm school."

"Did your school-assigned 'Big Sibling' not give you the 'Welcome to the Madhouse, try not to die' speech?"

"I did notice the lack of enforcers." Hence why she was down here instead of hiding up on a roof. "He said something about a moose, but I like to get second opinions."

Especially when places like this didn't do things for people like her for no reason.

Steph had wandered up toward the school just to check it out, since apparently there were newbies today and it was a whole thing, and she wanted a glimpse of how weird this castle-for-a-school with its totally non-standard curriculum might possibly be.

So far it was pretty much the total opposite of how she remembered all the start of the term stuff at Blackwell used to go.

Though speaking of which, was she actually seeing a Blackwell Academy logo on one of the kids' shirts?

Was that her Blackwell drama department shirt? She couldn't remember seeing it in with the rest of the clean laundry today, come to think of it.

"Hey," she called, frowning slightly as she started in Vi's direction. "Totally idle question, but... where'd you get that shirt?"

She couldn't entirely rule out the possibility that the kid was actually a transplant from some wacky-future-timeline version of Arcadia Bay, thanks, Fandom.

It figured, the day Vi was having today, but she could still bluff it out.

"This old thing?" She winked, because hey, might as well distract the cute girl. "Just had it lying about."

This tack might have worked better if the shirt wasn't a size too small. Vi's jacket was probably looking very familiar right now too.

Aw, baby gays were adorable. Steph smirked faintly -- sorry, Vi, the wink wasn't going to work but hey, respect for the technique.

"Weird, it looks a lot like one I just had 'lying about,' but I couldn't find it this morning? Love the jacket, by the way."

Hey, just give Vi time, she'd been well on the way to wearing Sevika down before she'd turned out to be a filthy traitor (she hadn't been, at all).

"Huh, funny coincidence that." This wasn't going great, but she hadn't immediately started yelling for the enforcers, so it wasn't going terrible either. "Yeah, I kinda like it too."

"Not everybody can pull that look off." Steph sounded kind of like she approved, actually.

In her time in the Seattle queer punk scene she'd run across a few stray teenagers who were trying to escape some bad situation or other, which was vaguely along the lines of the vibe she was getting here. Hell, she couldn't even be mad about it.

"Kinda crazy that someone else with that shirt turns up in this tiny-ass place. I'd ask how the drama department is doing these days, but I doubt I'd know any of the people there now."

Yeah, she knew what had happened to her stuff, but this was just amusing now.

Well, a stray teen escaping a bad situation wasn't an inaccurate assessment.

"Thanks." That got a small, genuine smile from Vi. "You know drama kids, they're always dramatic." She was going to find that a lot less funny when she realised she was in Anakin's class

"But, hey, I'm sure your shirt'll turn up somewhere. Eventually." She was sure there were plenty of less cool people on this island careless enough to leave their clothes where she could find them.

"I'm not that attached to it anyway," Steph said with a knowing grin. "If it turns up, cool, but if not, whatever."

Vi rolled her shoulders and leaned back against the table. "Name's Vi. You a student here too?"

It wasn't like she had any idea how long people were supposed to attend this school.

Steph burst out laughing for a second. Sorry, Vi.

"Hell no. School days are long behind me." By like five years, but who was counting? "I'm Steph. I run a store in town, I just wanted to come check out the picnic, score some free food, y'know."

"I thought the same thing," Vi said. "But when I tried for the free food they made me a student, so you should probably watch out."

"I don't think that's gonna --" Steph paused. "Actually, not going to rule that out here, come to think of it. So wait, you didn't actually come here intending to be a student?"

Considering the kid reminded her a bit of Chloe, Steph was guessing probably not.

"I didn't even mean to come here," Vi said. "Not entirely sure how it happened."
