Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

It was unseasonably warm in Fandom today, which was good news for anyone who didn't want to have to worry about bundling up, and bad news for anyone hoping for a snowy picnic. Traditions were traditions though, so there was still a bonfire going and plenty of supplies for s'mores and hot chocolate among the variety of foods and drinks that had been prepared for the new folks.

Once everything was set up and un-tasteful amounts of glitter had been brushed off of everything, it was time to be welcoming!

"No one has given you the full lecture yet?" she asked, bemused. "You must not have arrived with many new students."

"The short version is this -- congratulations. You are now attending high school on a multidimensional nexus. Aliens, magic, and time travel are all real. Super powers are real. Alternate realities are real. The island itself is slightly sentient and likes to do things like have eggnog come out of the faucets at Christmas time, so always check your shower before you step into it. Unless you like eggnog hair, but I do not recommend it."

Guillermo hadn’t no, he had just been happy that two people had been willing to talk to him to not think about the mysterious school he’d been enrolled in.

He blinked a little and his eyes widened, “really?” he managed to get out, “this is so awesome!”

Was that the response Illyana was expecting, he was being an excited nerd right now…he did realise this could be some massive hazing prank but after meeting Kurt …he was willing to believe just about anything.

"Really," she promised. "See that table over there with the food? Watch this."

With a wink, she opened a Stepping Disc portal right next to them, and then LEANED INTO IT. Over by the food, an identical portal opened up, and the upper-half of Illyana leaned out, poured them two hot chocolates, and then she stepped back and stood up, offering him one of the two drinks as the dual discs snapped out of existence.

"I made one with marshmallows, and one with none," she said, offering him both drinks. "New kid's choice."

“Oh that is so cool! Thank you!” Guillermo exclaimed excitedly as he accepted the hot chocolate with marshmallows, “I’ve never seen anything like that before, my home’s pretty boring,”

Aside from the secret community of vampires that existed and being related to Van Helsing and things like that …Guillermo was actually far from boring, he just didn’t know any of that yet,

"Well, Fandom is weird even when it is boring, so it has that going for it," she replied. "Where and when are you from, then? So I can make sure I tell you if there are important differences that I know about."

"For instance, here on Fandom, it is the year 2022. Which? At home, for me, that is the future. Will be the future." Illyana shrugged. "Time is a weird soup."

Guillermo didn’t think this day could get any better, “oh I’m in the future?’ he managed to squeak out, “I mean I’m from 2004? So I guess it’s going to be the future for me as well?” he tried, “and I’m from New York City, the Bronx to be exact,” he told her.

"Oh good, now there are three of us. You, me, and Brooklyn," she said, almost cheerfully. "I was born in Russia, but I currently live on Bleecker Street, in the Village. It's also 2005 at home, so we're time-buddies too."

"We will have to get you a new phone. They are the tiniest computers."

“Oh cool,” Guillermo’s eyes were still wide with wonder and then blinked a bit, “new phone? They have computers in phones?” he tilted his head and got out the Nokia that his mum had made him take to school so that he could check in with her at home, “do they not make these anymore?” his phone was was the size of a small brick and the only thing it could really do aside from message and call was play snake on it.

"Oh, you sweet new child." Illyana pulled her iPhone 12 out of her pocket and held it up. "Behold. Not the newest and fanciest phone, but you can watch television on it. And send emails. And I guess regular text messages and calls too, but who calls people? Not me. I just send my dads strings of emojis that they have to translate."

It shouldn't have been possible for Guillermo's eyes to go that wide with excitement, "this is future technology?" he was amazed, "you can watch television on it?" someone didn't yet know about streaming, "so you don't need a tv now to watch movies and shows, are dvds still a thing?" he found himself babbling.

It was cute. "Televisions are still a thing," she said, bemused, "--because big screens are good. People tend to get the dvds for their favorite shows, in case the internet decides 'oh, I am not going to have this available anymore,' because sometimes the media companies get in spats, or decide to create scarcity, but most people just do streaming. Which is different from torrenting. Torrenting sites are still a thing, but not, like, a big thing. Streaming from particular paid sites is legal and encouraged. Torrenting things gets you viruses and fines."

"Oh," Guillermo was actually a bit relieved since he had basically bought most of his physical media collection, "is ... how many streaming sites are there?" he wondered, "I bought my movies and tv shows," he revealed, "I guess I have a couple of decades worth of tv shows and movies to catch up on don't I?" he paused, "any recommendations on where to start?" not to mention comics and books, he wondered how many new vampire related movies and tv shows there were now.

"I will make you a list of the streaming options," she promised. "Honestly, they should start putting that sort of information in the handbook. If there is even a handbook at all."

"Oh! And speaking of the handbook that may or may not exist, I did make a list of other important things the last time I had a new Little Sibling." Illyana quickly pulled it up on her phone, silently reading it over quickly before nodding to herself.

"Okay, it is still up to date. Fandom Island Survival Tip Number One - Do NOT pet the gremlins. If you see a gremlin, leave as quickly and quietly as possible. Their bite makes you hallucinate and do ridiculous things."

"Oh ..." Guillermo blinked a little at the warning, "does that ... how often has that happened to be considered the most important survival tip?"

"They really like biting people," she said bluntly. "They seem to have a particular taste for Dean Skywalker and his family, from what I've heard, but they're an absolute pest and will nip anyone they can catch."

"Second, assume you have zero privacy. There is a radio station on the island. The reporters are sentient squirrels, so they're everywhere. If you want a private conversation to stay private, you have to bribe them with rum." Illyana made a face. "I am aware how ridiculous that sounds, and I wish I was joking."

“Okay, avoid gremlins, got it,” he nodded to show he understood and then he listened to the next tip, “the squirrels are alive here?” He may have excited by that prospect, “oh wow … and they do radio?” He blinked a little and looked around to see if he could find a squirrel, “are they listening in on our conversation right now?” since he didn't have rum on him, he was kind of impressed by that idea.

"Are they undead where you're from?" she asked, amused. "But yes, they're sentient."

"We do also have undead. The band at Caritas is made up of zombies, the bar that doesn't serve 'minors,'" yes, you could probably hear the air quotes there, "--is owned by a vampire, and I think the librarian is some sort of warlock? He's undergone at least one dark resurrection magic on him that I can sense. But I think that just makes him stupid, non undead."

"Well no they're ordinary squirrels where I'm from ... my world is quite boring," it wasn't he just didn't know it and then his expression lit up when he heard the rest of her sentence.

“There’s a vampire here who owns a bar!” he let out a squeak and was already majorly fanboying, it was possible if Guillermo’s eyes were any wider they’d fall out of their sockets, “an actual real vampire? I’ve always wanted to meet one!”

That was clearly the most important thing to focus on and not anything about zombies or warlocks or that there was a bar that did cater to minors.

"His name is Eric, he is an actual Viking from what I've heard, and for an immortal he is awfully hung-up on things like drinking laws," Illyana complained, rolling her eyes. "Even if you are of legal drinking age at home."

"Apparently being a business owner can make you boring, even if you are a vampire. Kitty's bar, Caritias, is much more fun."

“Eric the vampire,” yes Guillermo was still in awe and figuring out a way that he could actually meet him and possibly ask him a million questions - “oh that is so cool, I love vampires - ever since I saw ~~meta for~~ Interview with a Vampire when I was kid, I didn’t think I’d be going to a school where there’s a local vampire,”

Then he seemed to register the rest of what Illyana had said, “they’ll really serve you anything? At Kitty’s bar?” Guillermo was intrigued, he admittedly didn’t have much experience with drinking and socialising since he didn’t actually get invited to those kind of events.

"Because Katya -- Kitty -- is a good an sensible person, even if she's too old and has a kid," Illyana answered. "...sorry. I know a version of her who's MY age at home, and possibly my best friend there. So an adult-version here is weird, even after two years."

"But yeah. If you can walk and talk, you can order a drink. The bar also has a really cool no-violence spell on it, so anyone who gets too drunk and tosses a punch gets teleported into the duck pond. It's an amazingly complex piece of magic, I'd really love to take it apart and study it someday."

"...and put it back together. I wouldn't leave her bar without its protection spell. I'm not that bad a friend."
