Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was Fall! It was stupidly humid today and it was about a billion degrees, but the picnic area was full of apples, pumpkins, and those decorative corn stalks that looked cute until it rained. There was food on tables--including more Cup Noodles than strictly necessary--and chairs scattered throughout the lawn in front of the castle.

Welcome, new and old, to Fandom High! It's only gonna get weirder.

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Clare felt like she was quite prepared for this, having sponsored a wain from Chernobyl who'd tried to sleep with James and all. She'd even remembered to bring a gift that wasn't from the bottom of Erin's purse.

Everyone enjoyed biscuits, right? Right! So she bounced on her tiptoes and yelled, "Terra?" in a hopeful way.

Was someone shouting her name?

Someone was shouting her name.

Why was someone shouting her name? Had she done something wrong already?

Oh, no. They were going to send her home and while she really hadn't been all that keen to leave Alfea in the first place, her father was sure to give her that disappointed look she hated so very, very much and she really didn't want to have to do that.

She straightened up, figuring the least she could do is face the music, and headed towards the sound of someone calling her name.

"Yes?" she said. "I'm- that's me. Terra."

"Oh, good, you look normal and not like you want to eat me," Clare burbled happily. "Me roommate from the summer is a wee bit peculiar. Hi! I'm Clare and I'm here to help you get adjust to your new school!"

All of this, of course, was spit out at about a thousand miles an hour with a thick Northern Irish accent.

Oddly enough, there was a Realm of the Otherworld whose people had an accent that was… startlingly similar.

Not that they came to Solaria- or at least, the part of Solaria that Terra was familiar with (so, Alfea’s grounds, basically)- all that often.

Still, the end result was that Terra wasn’t caught entirely flat-footed by that accent. It did take her a moment to puzzle out what Clare had said, though. Most importantly, the fact that she wasn’t in trouble. She’d deal with the ‘normal’ bit (and the fact that there were people here who looked like they might want to eat other people, apparently) in a minute, really.

“Oh,” Terra said, relaxing just a bit. “That’s a relief. I thought I might be in trouble.”

"Why?" Clare asked. "Did'ye threaten someone on the bus ride here?"

“No!” Terra shook her head. “At least, I don’t think I did?”

Terra was absolutely the kind of person who worried they might have packed a gun in their carryon when going through airport security, despite not actually owning a gun.

So was Clare! They could be the most neurotic together.

"You'd know if it happens," Clare said wisely. "At my old school my friend Michelle did it because it was a wee first year in our seats but then it turned out that the wee first year was the sister of Big Mandy who's terrifying and then we all had to get detention and Sister Michael was very disappointed."

Breathe, Clare.

"Anyway, welcome to America, unless you are American, in which case, welcome to this great whomping castle that no one told me America has?"

“American?” Terra repeated, in her ~~British~~ Solarian accent. “Oh, no, no. This is my first time in America, actually. I’m from, er. Solaria? I don’t suppose you’ve heard of it.”

Dowling had said this island, while firmly part of the First World, was a place where many people knew of and understood magic. So. Maybe?

"I haven't," Clare said. "Is it near Wales, then?"

So this was Fandom. Kiem had put on a name tag, and looked around for his big sibling. He tried to seem a lot more relaxed than he felt, but didn't quite succeed.

Alara had spent the last week ~~handwaviky~~ on Xelaya and gotten in late last night.

She’d found out she was going to be a big sibling this semester and headed to the Welcome Picnic, looking around til she found the name tag, “Hi Kiem?” she said with a smile as she approached him, “I’m Alara, I’m your big sibling,”

"Oh, hi!" Kiem held his hand out, smiling. "I'm Kiem. As you noticed."

Alara looked a bit odd, but so was the whole place, what with being on a planet he had never heard about and all.

She smiled and she shook his hand “Nice to meet you Kiem, did you have any difficulty getting to Fandom?”

"There was a shuttle," he said.

An odd one but still.

"It was just... further than I had expected."

A planet he had never heard about.

“Oh, where”a home for you?” she asked, “people can travel quite far across space and time to come here,” she paused , “I’m from a planet called Xelaya myself, in the 25th century,”

"Iskat," Kiem said. "Space and time? I suppose that would explain things, although I've never heard it would be possible."

Right now he was prepared to accept a lot of things as possible.

So far Fandom High was completely different to what Jo had expected and put on a name tag as she looked for her big sibling.

She tugged at her blouse rather awkwardly as she waited.

"Hello," Nell said, smiling at the other girl. "My name's Nell and I'm going to be your big sibling here at Fandom."

“Hello,” Jo smiled back, “it’s nice to meet you Nell,”

"Nice to meet you as well. Did you have a good trip here?" Nell asked. "I know it can be, well, a little strange here when you first arrive."

Jo nodded, "it was rather a long trip but I got to the shuttle okay," she said, "the bus trip was rather weird,"

Jo had never ridden in a noodle bus before.

"Was it?" Nell said. She hadn't heard about the noodle bus yet. "I didn't arrive on the bus myself, so I don't know much about it."

"The bus was a giant noodle cup," Jo explained, "I think that's what I heard it being called, it was my first time catching a bus so it was rather different,"

"A noodle cup," Nell said wonderingly. "Huh... I don't think that's exactly normal, but then you'un will find Fandom can be pretty odd. Nice, but strange."
