Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was Fall! It was stupidly humid today and it was about a billion degrees, but the picnic area was full of apples, pumpkins, and those decorative corn stalks that looked cute until it rained. There was food on tables--including more Cup Noodles than strictly necessary--and chairs scattered throughout the lawn in front of the castle.

Welcome, new and old, to Fandom High! It's only gonna get weirder.

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Belle was on the lookout for her new roommate, complete with a carefully lettered name tag stuck to her chest. She would miss Lydia, of course, but she'd grown accustomed to having someone else around and a new roommate would be welcome.

It was going to be a bit strange not sharing a huge dorm room but Jo was rather secretly relieved that her roommate was going to be a girl, she spotted the right name tag and went up to Belle.

“Hello,” she said, trying not to sound nervous, “I’m Jo,”

"Oh good," Belle said. "We've found each other. I'm Belle." As the name tag attested!

"Welcome!"

“Thank you,” Jo smiled, “this is all quite different from my last boarding school,”

"I hadn't been to a proper school before this," Belle said. "But it's quite different from home. I do like it here though."

"Terra Harvey?"

Just walking around reading on people's name tags seemed more awkward than calling someone's name.

Oh. Oh.

Another person calling her name. At least she'd calmed down enough from that initial anxiety to no longer automatically assume it was because she was in trouble.

"Yes?" she said, hesitantly.

"Hi! I'm Kiem. I think we are going to be roommates."

This was said with a friendly smile as Kiem extended his hand.

Terra took Kiem’s hand and shook it, mostly on autopilot.

Much like how her mouth just kind of was working on autopilot when she said: “Oh, you’re rather more… male, than I was expecting.”

Kiem blinked. "What?"

"You said we're to be roommates," Terra pointed out. "I've never lived with a boy before. Well, that's not true, I've a brother and I certainly have lived with him, but we never shared a room." A beat. "You are a boy, aren't you? My apologies if I've got it horribly wrong."

"I am," Kiem said, still not quite getting the problem, so he added: "I've never shared a room with anyone either, but I promise I'll keep my half tidy."

He wouldn't.

The problem was that Terra was terribly shy, and the possibility of sharing a space with someone of a different gender had never occurred to her, because that wasn’t custom in Solaria.

“That’s good!” she said brightly. “Er, how do you feel about plants?” Terra’s half of the room was likely to resemble a greenhouse in a matter of hours, and it’s possible some of that might seep out onto Kiem’s side.

"Plants? I like plants."

He did, not that he knew much about them.

"So you have plants? That's great."

At least it was good? Probably?

"Have plants," Terra echoed, with an awkward giggle. "You could, uh, say that. Yes."

"A lot of plants?" Kiem asked. "I don't mind. Unless they're going to poison me in my sleep or something."
