Introduction to Law Enforcement, Monday

"Hello, children!"

How did Lucifer manage to pair that bright grin with a look that read please stay at the agreed-upon distance? "Welcome to our crime scene."

... They were in the Danger Shop, yes, made up to look like the intersection in front of Lucifer's new house. There was a body on the ground, on the steps of the Post Office, and the wreckage of a rickshaw just a few feet away, in front of Fast Eddie's.

"Today is the first of our classes on observation. Observe the crime scene."

A long pause.

"... Well, go on, observe the crime scene. Do I have to do everything around here?"

You could, presumably, at least try to give them some kind of sense what they should be looking for, Lucifer.

He did not.

"Oh. Hey. Free iPhone!" Eleanor said taking said iPhone and holding it up. "I get to keep this right? I mean, this poor forker isn't going to use it."

After getting clarification from her teacher, Eleanor spent the next couple of minutes trying to get into the phone to see if there was anything worthwhile there.

That post office was a siren call for her. But she resisted. At least until she could see if this guy had a tinder profile or something.

Tip was not rifling through the body's outfit. She was pretty sure you were supposed to wear gloves when investigating a crime scene, and she didn't have any.

She was poking at it with a pen, though. She had one of those.

"Do you want me to turn it over?" Illyana asked, watching Tip poke at it with a pen. "I can do that."

"Can you do it without contaminating the crime scene?" Tip asked. "I think that's supposed to be important."

"Sure."

Illyana took a step back and closed her eyes. She lifted her hands slightly, muttering the last two syllables of Agamotto's incantation of basic levitation as she turned her hands over to be palm up, and the fake-corpse rose from the ground to about five feet in the air, as if an invisible platform was under it.

"There. That way we can get under it and look without rolling it over and losing anything."

The mole on the back of Tip's neck flashed purple during the incantation. Tip didn't notice.

"Nice," she said, smiling. "Thanks! I'm Tip, by the way."

"Illyana." She squinted at the body. "So. What are we supposed to look for? A note? His entrails?"

Tip gave Illyana a raised eyebrow at that. "I think more like, injuries. Things that might tell us what happened right before or as he died."

"Entrails can tell you a lot," Illyana protested, but she knelt down to examine the ground under the body, careful to keep her hands to herself. "Doesn't look like anyone dropped anything, at least. Too bad, that would be nice and easy if there was a knife or something."

"Unless it was planted there," Tip said. "Though he's a white boy, so probably no one would have bothered." She used her pen to poke at the now floating body. "Can you tell the difference between a stab wound and a bullet wound? Boy was definitely hit by something on his side here."

Illyana glanced at her, confused, at the 'white boy' comment, but got up to peer at what Tip was indicating.

She pulled the sleeve of her hoodie down over her hand, and used it to push his clothing out of the way, keeping her fingers from touching it directly. "Don't know what a bullet wound looks like, but that's not a stab wound from any weapon I know," she said. "It only goes in. When you're stabbed, there's also damage from the weapon being removed. Like, tearing outward."

Tip nodded. "Makes sense. So he was probably shot, then." She looked around at the street. "Maybe a drive by?"

Del marched over from where she'd been speaking with the teacher and announced, "I am observing the it's-supposed-to-be-a-person-dead-by-murder-thing."

She sort of nudged the body with the toe of one boot. "It is not moving. Good for you, body! Dead people don't move much except in comics. Very good job being a dead person. Um. But why are you dead?"

The body probably wasn't going to answer.

And see? The good thing about starting with taking evidence photos of the rickshaw was that, by the time he'd gotten to doing the same for the body (ugh!), it looked like his classmates totally had it covered! They were totally all good, no one needed gross photos of dead bodies! They were a team, right? Right! So good. Good. They got it pretty good by now, right?

RIGHT.
