Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was warm, the food smelled good, and there was a good chance the new folks were a little extra glittery. What else could go into a perfect day for the picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sabine had been feeling better after getting away from Fandom for a bit, but she'd spent most of yesterday trying to shake off the residual gross feeling by changing her hair. It was shorter- it'd been too long before, anyway- and started out green, fading to yellow at the tips, and you know, it did help.

She found a seat at a table with a plate of food so she could watch who was there, see if anyone looked particularly interesting.

"I really like your hair," Keyleth told her, waving. "Did you get it cut, too?"

"Yeah, I needed the change," Sabine said, running her hand through said hair. "How're you doing, Keyleth?"

"Better," Keyleth said, tilting her head a bit from side to side to imply that it had been a little bit touch-and-go for a bit there. "Kind of excited about new classes and new students and everything. Did you have a good break week?"

"It got better," Sabine said slowly. "I'm kind of just looking forward to getting on with things after everything, you know?"

"Tell me about it." Keyleth sighed. "At least there'll be a lot of new stuff to keep us sort of distracted for a while. Do you know what you're taking yet this semester?"

"Terrain and You, Ethics, and Physical Education," Sabine said. "Decided to keep things light this time. What do you have?"

"I'm in all three of those, too!" Keyleth blurted out, looking kind of delighted about it. "I thought about taking a few more, but I should probably spend some time on my magic studies, too, so . . ."

"That's still learning, therefore it still counts," Sabine reasoned.

Summer had been absolutely terrible about finding Sabine to talk to her, and she understood that a good part of that was because talking to Sabine was the last thing she really had to do before everything was completely set. The longer she put it off, the longer she could cling onto that last excuse to stay here, for just a little bit more.

But she told herself if she saw Sabine at the welcome picnic, then she'd do it, she had no excuse not to, just get it over with, woman.

"Hey, Sabine," she waved a little as she approached. "How's it going? New hair, right?"

Now to see if Summer could actually get to the point while trying to get to the point of leaving...

"Always," Sabine said lightly, which was not exactly true, but it was also usually a safe bet. "It's going okay. What about you?"

"It's looks great," Summer said, and she meant it, but she moved on from it quickly, worried she lose her momentem, and she supposed she'd worry about whether or not it just wound up sounding flippant later. "And I'm doing well. I was really hoping to catch you, actually, I've been meaning to ask you something. How do you feel about taking on a special project?"

"I like projects," Sabine said slowly, clearly interested. "What've you got?"

"I've got a ship," Summer answered with a smirk, "in desperate need of a make-over."

"I can make over ships." She was kind of dying to, actually. "What do you have in mind?"

"What I have in mind," she said, "involves pretty much finding every can of bright pink spaceship paint I can get my grubby little hands on."

Low profile? What was that?

"With turquoise accents. I'm willing to leave the details to you, though, because you've got a really good eye and I trust you'll make it way better than what'll probably be the result if I tried to actually explain to you my vision."

"Middling to okay," Sabine said, considering it. Mostly she'd been antisocial. "Haven't seen you in a while, hi."

She'd take full blame for that, too, with the antisocialness.

"Luckily I skipped out on the last week of awfulness," Lana said. "Other than that, I've just been enjoying the time off, reading in the library mostly. Did you ever get my message about leaving before that last week?" she asked. "Norman did, but Nina didn't, and I'm wondering if there's a problem with my phone."

"I got it, but I didn't see it until after everything. Really wish I had..."

Because that week had been terrible and she would like to have skipped it.

"It's been a lot calmer," Sabine admitted. "I don't mind a breather between this and the next time the island, or something on the island, or something coming to the island, wants us dead."

"A breather is lovely," Lana agreed. "I was telling Kanan, I hadn't been anywhere deadlier than Korriban before this summer, and I was fine with that, honestly."

"I would have been fine with it if it had just ended and we went back to normal life," Sabine mused. "That last week was not okay."
