Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Jono was here today. Actually more or less all here today, in fact, with his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned back against one of the tables, ignoring the food entirely and keeping an eye on the students.

He hadn't wrapped up today, no. Some years, he just figured it was kinder to get the shock of a teacher on fire out of the way right up front.

Hannibal was also here today, possibly hovering a little around Jono to make certain he didn't zone out too badly.

He had very good coffee with him, but also strawberries as a backup if needed.
furnaceface: (Scars too)

Jono saw what you were doing there with those strawberries, Hannibal.

... He'd allow it.

//Back to teaching,// he noted, a little wryly. //Missed it, here.//

Always kind of did.
sharp_man: (not buying it)

"At least at this school, I'm less likely to be arrested for defending the students."

No, he wasn't letting that go anytime soon. The police in your world were rude, Jono.

Jono gave Hannibal a quiet look at that, considering.

//Police here aren't mutant-hating bigots,// he settled on. //Attackers are usually fairly obviously inhuman.//

Made a lot of difference. On both counts.
sharp_man: (I wonder...)

Re: Meet Your Teachers! [Spring 2019]

[personal profile] sharp_man 2018-12-29 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
As if only the inhuman were monsters.

"Perhaps I should apply to run for police chief in New York," Hannibal mused. "I'm certain I could get a sufficiently upstanding identity."
furnaceface: (Hear Something?)

//Well. That'd be...// Jono just tilted his head, picturing it. //... People would notice prisons being emptier than usual.//

Honestly.

[personal profile] sharp_man 2018-12-29 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm certain there are more than enough criminals to keep the prisons properly stocked," Hannibal said. "The difference would be that they would be those causing difficulties for others, rather than those attempting to solve problems."

And he wouldn't care if they were baseline humans, mutants, or the police themselves. He was equal-opportunity.

And here Jono had been making a comment on Hannibal's larder...

Erm. Almost.

There was no point in being obvious about things.

"Enough to fund my campaign?" Hannibal asked. He was considering it now.

Jonothon was side-eyeing you so hard, Hannibal.

//That'd be more'n a full-time job,// he pointed out. //Are you looking to move to New York any time soon?//

Because he'd be cool with that, sure, but he'd have to sell his business and tie up a couple of loose ends first, probably.

... And selling the house in its current state would be tricky.
sharp_man: (I wonder...)

Re: Meet Your Teachers! [Spring 2019]

[personal profile] sharp_man 2018-12-29 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hannibal considered it a moment longer, then sighed. "I would have to complete ungodly amounts of paperwork, I'm certain, and there would be far too little time to influence individuals." He was about getting people to self-actualize, and had little desire to actually boss them around. "I suppose that is a thought for later days."

If he got very bored in old age, maybe.

He'd like to at least stay on the island until Alluka graduated, anyway.

"Well that's really fu..fantastically.. cool," Jack said to the guy on fire with no trace of irony in her voice about that completely inappropriate adjective. "How many times has someone poked a marshmallow at you?"

Be lucky there weren't any within easy reach or there'd have been one more attempt by now.

His lack of mouth didn't concern her. He was standing around with all the other awkward duckling teachers, she knew he had some way to communicate. Though she was a little fucked if dude started signing.

//Altogether too many times,// Jono rattled off, turning to look at Jack thoughtfully. //Rarely works out well for them. Th'marshmallows don't fare well.//

He generally made certain of it.

She bobbed her head affably enough. Honestly Jono if you were just going to walk around as a living campfire it would almost be disappointing if it didn't happen. "Figured." On both counts. She wouldn't like it either. She'd expect it and she'd make sure anyone trying the same would pull back a charred ..something, depending how she felt at the moment.

The voice in her head answered how he communicated. "What do you teach?"

Manners. "I'm Jack. Civics." If you could call it that.

Civics, hm? Jono considered her thoughtfully, and then nodded.

A civics teacher with a look like that about her almost certainly taught the sort of civics lessons he could respect.

"Right on," Jack laughed, "The portal sh..stuff's a trip. Pretty sure the gnomes still have all their little sphincters clenched up tight when it comes to our home, though. We don't have problems going back and forth the way some other people do."

They hadn't let Kaidan come home for months. They'd better be clenched up over that for a good long while.

"Where you dragging the munchkins off to?"

//Wherever we feel like at the time,// Jono replied, amused. //We haven't had a chance to really hammer out a syllabus yet,// because the Christmas break had gone... poorly for them, //but in the past we've visited th' Boryeong Mud Festival, watched the eruption of Krakatau,// that hadn't even been their most morbid excursion, //walked the students through an ossuary, some ice caves, Woodstock...//

Portalocity was kind of great, really.

The only words of that made any sense to her were 'ice caves'. "Ice caves? You're not taking 'em to Feros, are you? I don't recommend it, heard it's the pits," she offered.

Liara'd had some shit to say about Feros to be sure.

"That's on Earth, right?" Jack asked with the blankness of someone who'd never suffered through an elementary school geography class.

"Wouldn't take the kids anywhere in our galaxy," she responded when she'd thought about it a minute, "Most of it's still rebuilding. You'd have to ride herd on 'em pretty tight almost anywhere."

She thought at him. Maybe a little too loudly the way people who weren't used to this kind of communication did.

Kids are a commodity to the slavers.

Jono's answering wince suggested that he got that thought loud and clear.

And that he didn't much care for it. Understood it. Didn't care for it. He replied with only the faintest nod of his head in understanding.

//Can't take them to my reality either,// he offered. //Less because of them, more because I'm a bloody shit magnet back there.//

What a great genetic inheritance that was.

She kind of hoped he didn't pick up on the images that went with the thought. How she felt about slavers probably did, there was no way to stop the small burn of hate when she thought the word.

"You can take 'em to other places though, right?" she asked curiously, "Not just back to yours or this planet? If it weren't the rebuilding, mine'd be fine. As long as they weren't biotic, nobody'd give 'em so much as stinkeye."

If it weren't for that whole 'half the galaxy died and the rest are building back from the wreckage' part.

Jono had spent a year as a slave locked in the back of his own head, used to murder his own people.

He would judge nobody for their unkind feelings about slavers, or any images that might or might not go with those feelings.

//Other places, other times. Depends what Portalocity has available,// he explained. //Might try to take in some natural sights along the way. Volcanoes, jungles, not sure offhand if any of our students this semester haven't seen space yet...//
