Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

Octavia glanced over.

"All food should be free food." Not a particularly surprising take from Octavia Blake, there. But, she looked back at her plate, and shrugged. "It's good."

"Yeah, fuck capitalism," he agreed, eating a piece of pizza.

It was amazing it had taken this long for anyone to actually say the word to her.

"What?"

"What?" he asked, mouth full of pizza.

"Don't spit pizza at me," Octavia deadpanned, before tilting her head. "That word, capitalism? What's that?"

"You know, money for goods and services. Garfield's whole jam."

THAT MEANT NOTHING TO ANYONE.

His narrative wasn't wrong.

Octavia paused, then shook her head. "I'll look it up later," she said with a sigh. "How have you been?"

"I'm good, I'm good. I'm apparently teaching teamwork this semester?"

It would've been a stretch to call it smiling, but Octavia's expression seemed to soften some. Or lighten up, or something.

If you knew how to look, anyway.

"Well. Sounds about right."

"You think so?" He looked like a hopeful, hopeful puppy.

Octavia raised her eyebrows.

"Is that a serious question?"

He was so ridiculously sincere.

"I mean, I am a bit of Leroy Jenkins..."

A bit? A bit, Maggie?

Octavia was apparently feeling a little more animated today than most days, because she managed to convey it pretty openly with the shift in her expression that she had no clue what he was saying, and also that she was just going to sidestep it entirely.

"Yes, I think teamwork is your thing, Magnus."

Now he was going to make extra random pop culture references at her.

"Maybe you could come help the class sometime," Magnus suggested, brightening up a lot at that. "You and Cara can be frighteningly competent women and shit."

Octavia skipped saying she hadn't met Cara.

Or that she was intrigued by that description.

"Maybe," she said, shrugging. "I have no dea what they teach people here." Aside from teamwork, apparently! "But the only school I ever went to was the Earth Skills class, so I don't really know much about school to begin with."

"You can come by and watch! You know, how they do in colleges. Sit in on a class and check it out," he suggested in an oddly helpful fashion.

In Octavia's experience, 'oddly helpful' was kind of his whole thing. Or at least a decent chunk of it.

"Maybe," she said again.

She wasn't going to ask if that was even allowed, because honestly, it didn't occur to her that it might not be.

"I'll save you a juice box and a Lil' Debbie," he wheedled.

"I swear you're doing that on purpose," Octavia sighed. "Using words I don't understand."

"No, no, No! I'm helping you learn all new words this way!" Kind of?

"But I didn't learn the ones you just said," she pointed out. "I still don't know what they mean."

"What? Lil' Debbie? They're snackcakes. I might have some Zebra Cakes in my inventory..."

Great, now he was digging through it.

"Okay..."

She said it slowly.

Her idea of a cake was very fixed. 'Snack cake' probably couldn't be what she was thinking it was.

"Tada!" Magnus said, producing a box for her.

Octavia had seen him shed more weapons than he should've been able to carry, before, so she didn't really question where he'd had the box before this moment.

She took it. And turned it over in her hands a couple of times, looking over the packaging.

"'Contains ten cakes'," she intoned. "Not like any cakes I've seen before."
