Summer Games: Wednesday, The Park [morning]

"Good morning!" Anakin yelled into the megaphone from the small platform he had erected in the park. "Students, please listen for your names and find your partner or partners as your name is called: Sidon and Aloy; Jason and Rey; Bobby and Paris; Ahsoka and Uma; Theron and Peridot; Astrid and Norman; Tip, Sabine and Beaker."

Once the students were in place, Anakin held up a sheaf of paper in his hand. "Today, with the help of the proprietors in town, we're conducting a Scavenger Hunt. You have a very long list: You must find 15 of the items from that list and either take a picture or video of yourselves completing the tasks. Whoever completes their 15 in the shortest amount of time will win the coveted, terrifying, singing fish," he said, holding his hand out for it to fly to him. It was still shrieking Sabotage as it flew, but now it also rained confetti on anyone close enough to be in its flight path. As Anakin held it, it treated the entire group to holographic footage of Theron being chased by a Roomba.

You're welcome, Theron.

"Right," Anakin said slowly. "Someone come take this thing from me as quickly as possible. On your marks, get set, go."

Kanan was absolutely here. He was missing this spectator sport for nothing. Hell, he'd brought his dog along, because if there was anything that these students absolutely needed, it was further distraction on their way to go scavenge, naturally.

Stance was behaving himself, even, staying next to Kanan's side and prancing about a little, but not actually running off to tackle anyone unless Kanan gave him permission to.

As far as Fandom was concerned, this was such a low-key thing it should have been a total non-issue, and yet somehow, in the face of Prince Jaws and Guy on Fire (and Girl With Stripes and Grave's Disease and all the other oddities gathering just in this park, even), the dog with neon spots could not be ignored.

"That dog looks like something I had on my first backpack."

OH A PERSON! Stance was looking at the new person, his tail wagging a mile a minute. Could he? Could he? Was he allowed?

Kanan put his hand on Stance's head. No jumping up until you knew it was okay, buddy.

"I'm told he's pretty unique," Kanan allowed. "He's one of those things you probably wouldn't find outside of a Fandom Island trip. Or, apparently, backpacks."

Or, of course, the reality Stance came from in the first place.

"He's a normal dog besides the way he looks, at least."

"Honestly, I think I'm just glad you didn't dye him those colors yourself."

Because that was a terrible thing to do to a dog.

"... I don't think he'd stand still long enough to let me, even if that wasn't a terrible waste of my time," Kanan replied, raising an eyebrow. "I'm not even really a pet person. This one literally followed me home."

He'd been accosted by a puppy.

Because Cristina would be a really terrible pet owner. And that sounded just like something this place would make her have to deal with.

"I know at least one other person who wound up with a very stubborn surprise dog," Kanan offered. "Otherwise, most people come across them the usual way. I'm pretty sure."

He glanced down at Stance, who had resorted to prancing in place, hoping he'd get permission to go meet the new person.

"... Don't quote me on that, though. Knowing my luck and this place, it'll literally rain cats and dogs this weekend or something."

Oh no, Kanan. The next weirdness would be so much worse.

Cristina sighed. "Of course it will." She didn't say this was all in her head because that seemed to get people all riled up.

But she was still pretty sure this was all in her head.

"I'm Cristina, by the way. Dr. Cristina Yang. I'm working at the clinic."

Because her traumatic brain injury hated her.

"Good to meet you, Dr. Yang," Kanan replied, holding his hand out to shake. Stance was probably going to die if he didn't get permission to go say hi himself, soon. "I'm Kanan Jarrus. Teaching at the school and working Sundays at Luke's Diner."

Also participating in a rebellion back home. Also that.

"You too," Cristina said, shaking his hand in return. He seemed reasonably normal. Weird fashion sense, but that wasn't saying much here. "Your dog's kind of twitchy."

She was terrible at reading dogs.

"He likes people and I haven't given him permission to say hi yet," Kanan replied, shrugging it off. "He's still pretty young, he's not used to this many people at once and not being able to roam free to meet each and every one of them."

"Oh." Cristina looked down at the dog again, and offered him an awkward shrug. "Well. You're doing a very good job, puppy. Well done."

She hadn't had to deal with a dog much since Meredith lost Doc. And he was a demon creature with bone disease. She was never going to be very good at this.

"He'll get treats for behaving himself later," Kanan replied, smiling a little at the awkwardness. "Not really a dog person, I'm guessing?"

Kanan gave a little laugh as Stance went from prancing in place to hopping up onto his kind legs and whining.

"Oh, go on, you ladies' man," he said. "Say hi to Rey."

Yeah, that dog was off running for her like a rocket.

Rey laughed and crouched down to meet him, for better hello-giving, obviously.

"It's like you're happy to see me!"

Was it all the licking and the tail-wagging that gave that away? Was it? Kanan was ambling along not far behind Stance, grinning in clear amusement. He wasn't in quite the same rush his dog was in. Which was probably for the best.

"I think he likes you," he said. Embracing understatement.

"Well, we're friends," Rey pointed out, straight up sitting on the ground for better access. "It's good you brought him since he is obviously starved for attention."

"He's clearly never known love in his life," Kanan agreed, smirking. "His life is only sorrow and emptiness unless you're around."

This dog was spoiled rotten.

"Poor thing," she said, and looked up at Kanan. "Here to see... whatever kind of show you can get from here?"

"Figured if nothing else, watching everyone trickle in having been mauled by the polar bear should be interesting," Kanan agreed, only half joking. "And Stance needed to get out and about anyway, so I thought, why not?"

She just wanted to see what a polar bear looked like, like zoos don't exist.

"I work with the polar bear," Kanan pointed out. "But I'm sure Eliot's got some sort of game plan for maintaining minimal casualties."
