Summer Games: Wednesday, The Park [morning]

"Good morning!" Anakin yelled into the megaphone from the small platform he had erected in the park. "Students, please listen for your names and find your partner or partners as your name is called: Sidon and Aloy; Jason and Rey; Bobby and Paris; Ahsoka and Uma; Theron and Peridot; Astrid and Norman; Tip, Sabine and Beaker."

Once the students were in place, Anakin held up a sheaf of paper in his hand. "Today, with the help of the proprietors in town, we're conducting a Scavenger Hunt. You have a very long list: You must find 15 of the items from that list and either take a picture or video of yourselves completing the tasks. Whoever completes their 15 in the shortest amount of time will win the coveted, terrifying, singing fish," he said, holding his hand out for it to fly to him. It was still shrieking Sabotage as it flew, but now it also rained confetti on anyone close enough to be in its flight path. As Anakin held it, it treated the entire group to holographic footage of Theron being chased by a Roomba.

You're welcome, Theron.

"Right," Anakin said slowly. "Someone come take this thing from me as quickly as possible. On your marks, get set, go."

OH A PERSON! Stance was looking at the new person, his tail wagging a mile a minute. Could he? Could he? Was he allowed?

Kanan put his hand on Stance's head. No jumping up until you knew it was okay, buddy.

"I'm told he's pretty unique," Kanan allowed. "He's one of those things you probably wouldn't find outside of a Fandom Island trip. Or, apparently, backpacks."

Or, of course, the reality Stance came from in the first place.

"He's a normal dog besides the way he looks, at least."

"Honestly, I think I'm just glad you didn't dye him those colors yourself."

Because that was a terrible thing to do to a dog.

"... I don't think he'd stand still long enough to let me, even if that wasn't a terrible waste of my time," Kanan replied, raising an eyebrow. "I'm not even really a pet person. This one literally followed me home."

He'd been accosted by a puppy.

"Does that happen a lot around here?"

Because Cristina would be a really terrible pet owner. And that sounded just like something this place would make her have to deal with.

"I know at least one other person who wound up with a very stubborn surprise dog," Kanan offered. "Otherwise, most people come across them the usual way. I'm pretty sure."

He glanced down at Stance, who had resorted to prancing in place, hoping he'd get permission to go meet the new person.

"... Don't quote me on that, though. Knowing my luck and this place, it'll literally rain cats and dogs this weekend or something."

Oh no, Kanan. The next weirdness would be so much worse.

Cristina sighed. "Of course it will." She didn't say this was all in her head because that seemed to get people all riled up.

But she was still pretty sure this was all in her head.

"I'm Cristina, by the way. Dr. Cristina Yang. I'm working at the clinic."

Because her traumatic brain injury hated her.

"Good to meet you, Dr. Yang," Kanan replied, holding his hand out to shake. Stance was probably going to die if he didn't get permission to go say hi himself, soon. "I'm Kanan Jarrus. Teaching at the school and working Sundays at Luke's Diner."

Also participating in a rebellion back home. Also that.

"You too," Cristina said, shaking his hand in return. He seemed reasonably normal. Weird fashion sense, but that wasn't saying much here. "Your dog's kind of twitchy."

She was terrible at reading dogs.

"He likes people and I haven't given him permission to say hi yet," Kanan replied, shrugging it off. "He's still pretty young, he's not used to this many people at once and not being able to roam free to meet each and every one of them."

"Oh." Cristina looked down at the dog again, and offered him an awkward shrug. "Well. You're doing a very good job, puppy. Well done."

She hadn't had to deal with a dog much since Meredith lost Doc. And he was a demon creature with bone disease. She was never going to be very good at this.

"He'll get treats for behaving himself later," Kanan replied, smiling a little at the awkwardness. "Not really a dog person, I'm guessing?"

"I don't really have time for pets," Cristina said, then stopped and heaved a large sigh. "I didn't have time for pets."

The residents of this island were unreasonably healthy.

"Yeah, this place isn't terribly great if you want to fill time," Kanan said, not without sympathy. "Next thing you know, you'll be picking up hobbies. Coming to the Thursday evening movie club, or to watch a bunch of idiots swinging swords around in the park on Fridays."

There weren't many other ways to pass the time that he could think of.

"Idiots swinging swords?" Cristina perked up at that. "Tell me there's at least some blunt force trauma involved in that."

Blunt force wasn't as good as, say, getting stabbed in the heart, but it'd do in a pinch.

"Not often?" Kanan winced in sympathy. "I suppose when Peter shows up there's always a chance that he'll get the better of me. It's that slow at the clinic, huh?"

Cristina had spent the vast majority of her professional career at a hospital once dubbed "Seattle Grace Mercy Death". Anything would be "that slow" at this point.

"You're one of the idiots with a sword?" She looked him up and down appraisingly. "So much for being one of the normal ones."

"It passes the time," Kanan said, shrugging it off. "Still adjusting to life on the island, hm?"

Yeah, he wasn't going to deny not being normal. He'd be lying.

"I've been here a week and a half," Cristina said. "I'm still hoping I'll wake up any minute."

It was a fading hope. It'd been a week and a half.

"Yeah, it took me months to give up on that one," Kanan admitted. "Of course, once I was good and over it, that's when it finally let me leave."

Kanan didn't know the meaning of 'Stockholm syndrome,' but there you go.

"So if I want to stay, it'll let me leave, but as long as I want to leave it'll make me stay." Cristina sighed. "Yeah, that's not suspicious at all."

"You've been here a week and you're already calling an island suspicious," Kanan noted. "See, you're picking up quickly already."

"The hospital I used to work at was cursed," Cristina said by way of explanation. She mostly meant it metaphorically.

Mostly.

"Cursed?"

Yeah, you couldn't say a line like that to Kanan and expect him not to want to follow up on that one.

"I worked at Seattle Grace," Cristina said, by way of explanation. "We had that shooter awhile back? 11 people died. Plus there was the plane crash -- a bunch of us got stranded in rural Idaho. And died. Oh, and last year there was the hurricane, though that hit all of Seattle, not just the hospital. But we still managed to lose a doctor." Poor Brooks. "And that's not even getting to people getting cancer or hit by buses or that time we had to pull a live bomb out of a guy's chest. . . ."

She could sound blase about this now because she'd broken down about it so many times in the past. But she'd probably end up crying in the shower later.

Kanan was going to skip mentioning that he'd never heard any of this in favor of wincing and offering a very sympathetic, "Crap."

It summed up a lot.

"So you traded off hellish for absurd. Sorry if I crossed a line in asking, there."
