Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cosima took a sandwich and some chips, tried to sidestep the glitter as best as she could, and sat by a tree to try to figure out what exactly she'd gotten herself into. At least the people were pretty.

Some of them were pretty and shirtless and covered in glitter. And carrying a suit jacket and a shirt over one arm. Yeah. Ezra had decided to take a leaf from Face's book, here.

It was a good leaf.

"Hello, there," he said. "I don't think I've had the pleasure of your acquaintance yet."

"Probably not, since I've been here about half an hour," Cosima told him, smiling. Shirtless glittery boys carrying suit jackets were an excellent argument in favor of bisexuality. "Hey. I'm Cosima. And I seem to be one of the few people who came here on purpose."

Not that she had the first idea what she'd gotten into.

Ezra liked to think of himself as an argument in favor of all forms of non-monosexuality wherever he went. He smiled. "I'm Ezra, and I also came here on purpose. So we already have that in common. I like that for a start."

Of course, he wasn't sure how much of an idea she had about what she'd gotten herself into, yet.

"We're besties already," Cosima deadpanned. "So, did you get the 'special school for unique students' sales pitch, too?"

"Indeed I did," Ezra confirmed with a nod. "Although mine was the version where 'unique students' heavily included those of a supernatural persuasion. There are several versions of that pitch, so I don't know if you got the same one."

"No, mine was more about 'bright students who don't fit into traditional schools well,'" Cosima said slowly. "Say that part about the supernatural again?"

She'd heard enough weird stuff already that she could accept it, but it was still a new surprise every time.

"Some of our students supernatural creatures," he explained, helpfully, then held up his hands. "Surprise!"

"Uh-huh," Cosima said, raising her eyebrows. "Y'know, Ezra, the bizarre thing is I've already seen enough that I believe you. What are you, a wizard or something?"

Ezra smirked.

"I'm a fox."

He just... always had to put it like that because everything was a game, and just saying 'werefox' was boring.

Cosima smirked back at him. "I'm like at least three-quarters gay and I can see that. So being hot's your superpower?"

He snickered. "Well, that too," he replied, without any particular modesty because pffft, modesty. "But also in a more literal sense. I'm a were, of the fox persuasion. Means I can turn into a fox."

"Uh-huh." Cosima still wasn't sure if she totally bought this or if it was the weirdest attempt at picking her up ever, but at least the guy was entertaining. "And I suppose if I asked you to show me here, you'd say ..."

After agreeing to keep an eye on Cosima Niehaus, Hardison had done a bit of digging around to get more information--you know, standard operating procedure for a hacker. That digging had resulted in multiple pictures of Cosima, which meant he had no problems recognizing the girl with the glasses and dreads when he passed by her at the picnic.

"Cosima?" he asked, ambling over to say hello. "Hey, welcome to Fandom. I'm Hardison, a friend of Maggie's. 'Sup?"

He wasn't sure yet if her parents had told her she'd have some...minders...on the island, but he also didn't care. He was going to be up front about it, though he was viewing their role more as a point of contact for her at need, rather than some kind of nurse or caretaker.

"Maggie?" It took Cosima a second to figure out what he meant. Maggie was her parents' friend, not hers.

Though Hardison was a lot younger and cuter than most of the people she met through her parents.

"Oh, right. Hi, nice to meet you. My folks said I should say hi to you guys when I got here. Small world, huh?"

Hell yeah he was. Of course, that could be said for damn near everyone on the island as Cosima was likely discovering.

"Yeah, pretty much." It would be more accurate to say small multiverse, but he hadn't been hired by her parents to break her brain. "Me 'n my partners used to work with Maggie's ex-husband, Nate." For a given definition of 'work with' that included conning people out of money and into jail, usually. "If you want, I can introduce you to Eliot and Parker. I mean, I don't wanna interfere with your picnic or nothin', but we're all here pretendin' to be mature an' responsible adults who should totally be responsible for students' an' stuff."

"Nah, I think I'm picniced out," Cosima said agreeably. "Ten hours ago I didn't know magic was real. I'm ... processing. Old people pretending to be responsible sounds awesome right about now."

"I'mma just pretend I didn't hear you call me old," Hardison decided. "I ain't even thirty yet! I got years before that!"

You know. Unlike certain other members of his crew, Eliot.

"But, girl, I know exactly what you mean. I arrived at the end of February and still kinda side-eye the island sometimes. I had to fight off a tentacle-monster in the diner freezer the other week." Or whacked at it ineffectually with a spear while Eliot went all happy knife-crazy on it. They were pretty much the same thing. "C'mon, lemme introduce you to the crew."

He led Cosima over to where Eliot and Parker were standing. "Hey, y'all. Look who I found. This is Cosima. Cosima, this is Parker 'n Eliot."

"Hey, Cosima. I'm Parker." Parker waved from her perch on top of a picnic table, eating potato chips and taco chips covered in Ranch. "Did you meet Pinkie yet? Isn't she awesome? If you did, I mean."

Hey, Eliot wasn't even 40 yet! He wasn't that old. "She means the pony," he explained. "Which is terrifyin', and only nominally a pony." Eliot had managed to scrounge up a beer from somewhere. It was a picnic and he was almost 40, dammit, he got to have a beer.

"Hey, Cosima came over to talk to us old people--" that was said with an amused glance in Cosima's direction "--to get away from all the island's craziness. Let's talk about nice, boring, non-talkin'-pony things. So, Cosima, what classes you takin' this session?"

"Hi," Cosima said, waving a little to Eliot and Parker and then offering her hand for them to shake if they wanted. "Yeah, we can leave the pink pony to the side for a minute, thanks. I have popular mechanics, day after doomsday -- I think that one's yours" -- she nodded to Hardison -- "and sexual safety."

A beat. "People just get used to all the weirdness here, huh?"

"I been here about a year now," Eliot said, sipping his beer. "It's still really pretty bizarre."

"I like it. Even with Eliot not really being careful enough." In so many ways! "Everybody's weird to somebody. This weird is entertaining most of the time."

"Still a lot to get used to, especially if your worldview doesn't normally include--alla this." He'd thought about enumerating some of the weirder stuff on the island, then thought better of it. That wasn't going to help Cosima's culture shock anyway. "But, yeah, you do sorta get used to a certain level of weird."

And when that happened, the island went out of its way to surprise you anew, but again. Not a helpful comment.

"An', yeah, that one's mine," he added with a grin. "An' if it turns out you didn't mean to sign up for it or it's an office mistake, don't tell me, a'ight? Let me live in happy ignorance."
