Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It had now officially been a full semester, and Cassandra was still here.

If she was looking irritable but watchful as she sat at one of the picnic tables, fully armored and wielding a butter knife like it was a sword, well. That was why.

Cassandra managed to look as annoyed as Thorin felt. Also, she was one of the very few people dressed in a manner he was used to.

Though she was a she. And that was strange. Because Tolkien. He was under the assumption men didn't allow their women that sort of freedom. BECAUSE TOLKIEN.

But he still afforded her a curt nod.

Someone was nodding at her. Cassandra looked up...

...and saw a dwarf.

Well. She certainly hadn't seen one of those in some time. It seemed only courteous to nod back.

"Thorin, son of Thrain," he said, remembering his manners enough for a short dip of his head. "At your service."

"I am Seeker Cassandra Pentaghast," Cassandra said. "Welcome, dwarf. I assume you are new here?"

Yes, Cass, that was likely.

"You'd be correct in that assumption. Though where exactly here is..."

"Fandom Island," Cassandra supplied. "It is a strange, magical island, not of our world. It has a rather annoying habit of snatching up unwitting people and claiming them for itself."

She was also very helpful.

Thorin sighed at that, crossing his arms over his chest. "Is there no way to escape it's clutches?"

"I have been searching for some time," Cassandra supplied. "Some seem to be able to come and go as they wish. Others, such as myself, are trapped here. But this cannot be indefinite. I will not let it be."

She would punch the island in the face if she had to.

"I searched for a place to return to my home, but was unable to find it as well. Perhaps with time? No power should be capable of this."

Unless it was a wizard. It better not be a wizard. Goddamn wizards. All two that he knew of.

"It is a strange and ancient magic," Cassandra said. She didn't sound fond of it. "No doubt malicious. But it does not inflict any hurts otherwise, if you are worried."

Thorin just sighed instead of acknowledging any such fear. "My family will doubtless be in search of me."

Being second in line to the throne and all. Awkward.

"As is my Order," Cassandra said. "For whatever use it has been."

She let out a disgusted huff, directed at the island in general.

"Still here, I see," Anders said,because teasing Cassandra was among his favorite things. "Spot anybody interesting yet?"

Cassandra rolled her eyes. "Ugh," she said (that was to Anders' first remark), and, "There is a dwarf," to his second.

"Really? From Orzammar or a surface dwarf?" Anders asked, craning his neck to try to spot the dwarf. He was mildly fascinated; other than a few merchants when he was a boy, he'd never had much cause to speak to a dwarf.

"I believe he may be from Orzammar," Cassandra said, looking towards-- ah, there was Thorin. "He did not appear to be aware of the Chantry, and mentioned passing through the Dales."

No, Cassandra, the Dale. Singular.

"Huh. I thought they at least knew of it, even if they don't believe. Guess the Chantry's got more work to do before they get to having the chant sung from every corner bit," Anders said, glancing toward Thorin. He did indeed look like a dwarf. "I'll go say hello when I get a chance."

Cassandra shot him an amused look. "I would suggest leaving your 'sense of humor' behind," she said, "You will not find it appreciated by sensible people such as the dwarf."

"Yes, mother," Anders said,giving her a fond look right back. "Shall I tuck in my shirt and remember not to swear, too?"

Cassandra sighed with disgust. "What about you?" she said. "I almost feel as if I should not ask, but have you met anyone of note?"

"The only one I've talked to so far is my new little sister," Anders said. "Alluka. She seems sweet but I'm not sure I was ever quite that young."

He spoke from the advanced age of not-quite-17.
