Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"As is my Order," Cassandra said. "For whatever use it has been."

She let out a disgusted huff, directed at the island in general.

"Forgive me, I don't think I know of your Order," Thorin replied. "My contact with the cities of men has only been Dale."

As he was much too young to travel beyond that.

So he had visited southeastern Orlais? That was close to Orzammar, Cassandra supposed. It made sense.

"I am a Seeker of Truth," she explained. Well, in training, but piffle. "We serve the Chantry."

Actually, Dale and Erebor were in the north, holding against the remnants of the enemy's strongholds. But they didn't know that about each other.

"Chantry?"

Cassandra blinked.

"I am sorry," she said, "I assumed the dwarves below the surface knew of the Chantry, at least, surely."

"I cannot say I have heard the term before," Thorin admitted slowly. "What exactly is it?"

She was now certain that he had to be of Orzammar. Perhaps only recently sent to the surface. How else could he be this ignorant?

...Yes, she was so pleased to see someone of another species that she knew that she just assumed he came from Thedas.

"The chief religious organisation of humankind and many beyond us," Cassandra said, "We adhere to the Chant of Light, the words of Andraste and the wishes of the Maker."

Worship held little interest for dwarves. They were able to show their devotion to Aulë through work and craft, after all. Carrying on his teachings through their language as well.

"I cannot say I was aware men worshiped their maker in such a manner. "The ways of men tend to be... confusing at best."

"Spoken like a true dwarf," Cassandra said, with dry amusement.

Dwarves worshiped the Stone, did they not? And their ancestors. Yes.

"But if you wish to keep searching for a way out as well, I would happily contribute."

That got Thorin to smile a little at least.

"Should I find a way, I'll let you know. In the meantime..."

He was giving the glitter a disdainful look. You people could at least use real silver dust!

"You will learn to ignore the glitter," Cassandra said. "It is everywhere. I do not know why it fascinates them so."

"Are precious metals so rare here that they make fake ones?"

"No," Cassandra said, shaking her head. "But I would frown at anyone who would waste precious metals in such quantities as they waste glitter."

Clearly she'd never seen the wealthy of Erebor.

"They're too soft for anything but decoration," Thorin replied. "No use for armor or weaponry."

Because all dwarves liked smithing. His canon created the trope, okay? Kinda.

Only smith caste dwarves liked smithing, Thorin. Honestly.

"But the genuine metals would be useful as coinage," Cassandra pointed out. "You will understand my complaints better after the first dance you find yourself attending, I'm sure."

Thorin looked a little more happy at the mention of dancing. "A feast would be acceptable." A beat. "If proper food was provided."

WHY WAS THAT CHEESE FLAT? AND BREADY UNDERNEATH?

Cassandra raised an eyebrow. "You do not like the spread?"

"I cannot say I can name half of what it is."

Why were those things so orange? And puffy.

"I can promise you that none of it is poisonous," Cassandra said mildly, "But that is all I can say on the matter."

"Aren't you helpful," Thorin replied. But it was teasing in tone.

Cassandra snorted. "I am not a picky eater," she said.

Outside of having the patience of a runaway train, she wasn't a picky much of anything.

"If you wish for suggestions, I would advise you to speak to any of the many students currently inhaling half the buffet."

"I had assumed that was merely good manners for the peoples of men," Thorin shot back.

Oh, sick burn.

"For most men, yes," Cassandra said mildly. "But that is hardly specific to humans alone."

Buuuuurn.

He had to shrug in agreement with that. "Where is the ale or wine?"

He only saw oddly bubbled drinks and the usual water.

"They do not serve those officially," Cassandra said. "There is a strange rule here where they insist that those below the age of 21 should not drink such beverages."
