Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cassandra shot him an amused look. "I would suggest leaving your 'sense of humor' behind," she said, "You will not find it appreciated by sensible people such as the dwarf."

"Yes, mother," Anders said,giving her a fond look right back. "Shall I tuck in my shirt and remember not to swear, too?"

"I do not wish for miracles," Cassandra said dryly. "Least of all where you are concerned."

"Somehow I feel like I should be insulted by that," Anders mused, not sounding bothered in the least.

Cassandra sighed with disgust. "What about you?" she said. "I almost feel as if I should not ask, but have you met anyone of note?"

"The only one I've talked to so far is my new little sister," Anders said. "Alluka. She seems sweet but I'm not sure I was ever quite that young."

He spoke from the advanced age of not-quite-17.

"What do you mean?" Cassandra asked, squinting at him.

Anders squinted at her. "You're a girl," he said, as if it might have escaped her notice. "Were you still carrying around a stuffed animal and having tea parties at 14?"

He hadn't been. Fourteen for Anders had mainly been about trying to escape, interspersed with lengthy periods trying to get this girl or that boy to notice him. But the Circle didn't encourage you to remain a child.

Cassandra snorted. "No," she said. "The Seekers had me praying from dawn until sunset every day. There was little time for tea parties. Curious."

... Alluka, that was, since she assumed the girl was the one lugging around a stuffed animal and having tea parties.

"And I thought having to go to services every day was bad enough," Anders informed her. "I couldn't handle praying all the time."

Which was probably blindingly obvious, yes.

"Anyhow, I suppose it just means she needs someone looking out for her a little more. Might as well be me."

He was almost certain Cassandra would have some cutting response to that. He'd decided he didn't care.

"Or you could ask someone actually qualified, such as a teacher."

Cassandra was nothing if not predictable.

"It's called the big sibling program," Anders reminded her. "Not the bother-a-teacher program. Besides, what qualifications do their teachers have?"

"They are not mages who endangered others by running away from a perfectly safe environment?" Cassandra suggested.

"... besides that," Anders said, folding his arms across his chest protectively. "Maker's breath. You don't let go of things easily, do you?"

"The situation has not changed," Cassandra pointed out. "I don't see why I should change my opinion."

"Because you're being rude," Anders grumbled. "I don't always remind you you're still stuck on the island, or ask whether you've considered my thoughts on mage oppression."

He scratched his jaw as he realized he'd disproven this point barely five minutes before. "Usually. I thought it was funny to remind you about it today."

"You do both," Cassandra said flatly. "The latter more often than the former, and yet."

Really, Anders.

"Because I'm still right and you're just too stubborn to see it," Anders said, and laughed when he realized he'd just made her point exactly. "And now I see what you mean."

Neither of them was much good at letting things go.

Because they were both hard-headed people of action with very strong views.

Thedas was probably lucky they weren't of the same mind.

"Thank you," Cassandra said mildly. "You are reliable, at least."

She wasn't the only one who was predictable.

Anders gave her a sarcastic salute, fist over heart. "You're welcome. It's one of my better qualities."

"I was not aware you had better qualities," Cassandra said, but there was a tangible hint of humor in her voice.

She was aware their fights were occasionally ridiculous, yes.

"I've got oodles of them," Anders said, smiling back at her. "Dozens. Scads. Modesty isn't one of them."
