Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hanna ate some of the glitter, undisturbed by it after a semester of cake decorating with Derek and Pinkie. It didn't really taste like anything.

The other food did, though, and for this picnic (unlike her first) she was eating on top of a table, not under it.

Alluka watched the other girl eat some of the glitter.

"Does, does it taste good?" she asked, wandering over with a stuffed bunny in her arms. "The glitter? I've never eaten glitter before."

But she was totally willing to try!

Hanna smiled at the new girl, and said, "It doesn't taste like anything, much. It has a kind of ... interesting texture?" She licked her teeth to get some of it off, and offered, "You should try some on the cake. It's kind of nice that way."

Alluka studied the glitter.

"I bet it'd look the prettiest on chocolate cake," she decided, smiling back. "Which would mean it'd taste the best then too, right?"

That wasn't how taste worked but Alluka was going to pretend it was.

"It could be." If you liked something, maybe it would influence the taste? Hanna put down her food, and offered a hand. "I'm Hanna. Welcome to Fandom."

"A shiny spinny thing brought me here," Alluka shared, blinking at Hanna's hand for a moment before realizing she was probably supposed to shake it. So she went to do that, happy for the practice. "I'm Alluka! It's nice to meet you!"

She'd never gotten to say that before. Today was the best.

"Portal, maybe?" Hanna offered, a little amused at Alluka's enthusiasm, but determined to be kind about it. Remembering how scared she'd been her first day, she wasn't going to make anyone feel silly about being unfamiliar with things here. "And it's very nice to meet you too. Can I ask where you're from?" Putting it that way, Alluka would hopefully feel like it was okay to say no, if home was an awkward topic.

"From my room," she said happily, "but I didn't use a door, so this is still my room. It just got a lot bigger."

That was not how it really worked, but that was what Alluka was choosing to believe.

Which tested Hanna's resolution right there, or at least made her blink. Then she considered it, and asked, "Did the swirly thing just appear in your room, and you walked into it to see what would happen?"

"Is it safe to eat?" Ringo asked curiously, careful not to invade the other girl's space even as she leaned forward curiously. Then she flushed lightly. "I suppose that's a silly question, given that you just ate some..."

"No, not silly. I could be an alien who likes glitter," Hanna said agreeably. "And yes, safe. It doesn't really have a taste. But it makes the cake and cookies more fun to eat."

Hanna grinned. "And people ask about it." She stuck out her tongue, sparkles glittering on it, and giggled. "And the texture's nice." She pulled her tongue back in and offered her hand. "Hanna. Welcome to Fandom."

Oh, right.

"Ringo Noyamano," Ringo answered, bowing abruptly. "It's very nice to meet you." As she straightened, she seemed to remember Hanna's hand, and reached out to take it awkwardly.

Hanna shook it with a smile, and asked, "What do you think of Fandom so far? Did you expect to be here?" Since she'd already met Alluka, who'd apparently fallen through a portal with her stuffed bunny on zero notice.

"It's... not at all what I expected, to be honest. I mean, I knew it would be different, going to a boarding school so far away from home, but..." She shrugged. "So far, at least, it's just... different. Though it looks like it's going to be fun."

Peaceful, even.

"Where is home?" Hanna asked, nibbling on a slice of cake. "And different how? I never went to school before here," she added. "So nearly everything was new and different for me a few months ago."

"So it comes to this," Kathy said with a sigh. "Forced to eat glitter to survive. I could have predicted this, I guess." She laughed, waving at Hanna. "Hi! Happy picnic!"

"It's better than eating grubs," Hanna said mock-soberly, and smiled wider. "How are you enjoying it? Do you have a new roommate, or sibling?"

"New sibling," Kathy said, not as shocked by the idea of eating grubs as someone else might be. Beondegi was made from silkworm larvae after all. "Flick's staying for at least some of the summer, I think. But I've got a new little sister, Charlotte. She's taking everything I tell her pretty much in stride. I guess where she came from is pretty weird, too."

She sat on the bench near Hanna's perch and helped herself to some grapes. "How about you? New roomie? New little? Good classes?"

"No roomie at all." Hanna sighed a little. "Carmilla is gone for a vacation. She might be back in July, so..." No new person sharing her space yet, and she had mixed feelings about that. "I didn't sign up for the Big Sibling program. I still feel... strange, sometimes, about this place." She smiled at Kathy. "Good classes, I think. Even if there weren't any with Pinkie available this time. And I have a cat now."

"No roomie means you can have slumber parties anytime you want without having to worry about inconveniencing anyone, right?" Kathy pointed out encouragingly. "And, yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes I'm not sure I can answer all the questions about the island. I don't think I signed up for a little until I'd been here a year."

"This is true." Especially for Carmilla, who was occasionally eaten by rose vines from her bed and then spat out again, and had insomnia the rest of the time. "... I never asked. How long have you been here?" Hanna looked curious. "Are you staying for the whole summer?"

That sounded very normal, yes. "All summer, she said. I showed up the summer before my sophomore year and I'll probably stay as long as I can the summer after I graduate. I mean, my parents will want me home for a bit before I move to campus for college, but..."

She really enjoyed the freedom she had here on the island and wasn't looking forward to losing it back under her parents' roof, even for the fun of fighting crime in LA again.

"So what classes did you sign up for? And tell me more about your new cat."

Hanna had so little idea of what 'normal' consisted of, she just accepted everyone's baseline as the average.

"Velcro was Sparkle's. But he couldn't take his kitten to his new home. Too many people who had allergies, he said." She smiled a little shyly. "And he really didn't have a lot of time to ask anyone else, so of course I offered to keep him. So far it's been lovely to have him there... I signed up for, hmm. Miss Adler's class on Friday, about sexuality. The driving class. And something about the apocalypse, on Thursday?"

Might as well be prepared, right?
