Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"We'll figure something out." Ringo would just give them away, but she didn't know how Hanna would react to that offer. "They use rechargeable batteries. It depends on the specific pair, but most of them keep the batteries in the sole under the heel."

"They're wonderful! Thank you so much for letting me try that." Hanna caught her breath and added, "Next time I'll wear knee-pads, though."

Helmets were for people who didn't think they were indestructible!

"You're welcome!" Ringo beamed. "I'm glad you enjoyed it!" So glad!

"And I could probably get you some knee-pads and elbow-pads. Maybe some riding gloves?" She smiled. "When I started, I fell a lot, and you end up landing on your hands all the time."

She found herself staring at the ATs now that Hanna had them off, and had to do a quick mental battle with herself to not put them on and take a ride for herself right then and there.

"That sounds like a good precaution." Hanna watched Ringo's expression, amused, and suggested, "I could watch the rest of your stuff, if you wanted to take a quick run around the town."

That offer had Ringo chewing on her lip. Hard. Because it sounded so good!

She squinted, thinking about it. "Maybe... just to the end of the road and back?" She grinned, I kind of want to meet a few more people since it's my first day here..." And if she started riding, she'd do it until sunset.

"Fair," Hanna said, tilting her head. "They are your -- Air Treks? Boots? -- after all." She smiled. "And there are many, many people to meet."

"AirTreks," Ringo said, already scrambling to get her shoes off. "Or just 'ATs', since that's easier." You know, with being the same number of syllables.

She laced up, unable to help the huge grin splitting her face. "You... sure you don't mind?" Please don't mind, please don't mind!

Hanna shook her head, smiling, and waved one hand. "Go! Go! If they were mine, I'd already be gone!"

Ringo got out onto the pavement, and took a moment to find her balance. Then she crouched low, feeling that familiar roil of anticipation in her stomach. All she had to do was lean back, and... freedom!

This pair of ATs had been tuned over a period of months to Ringo's body. Height, weight, center of balance, riding style. All of it had been taken into consideration.

So she took one last breath, grinned, and was gone. She leaned back hard, going up to nearly 50 miles an hour in a handful of seconds. She wove back and forth across the road, leaning hard into each turn and skimming to the very edge of the pavement before turning back the other way.

Every movement was almost perfect. Practiced thousands of times, and drilled into muscle memory. No uncertainty, not hesitation, just speed and freedom.
